President-elect Donald Trump has nominated Hershel Walker for a major role in his new administration, NBC News reports, elevating the former NFL icon and Georgia U.S. Senate candidate who was one of his earliest endorsements during the 2022 elections.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that Walker would serve his new administration as the next U.S. Ambassador to the Bahamas, overseeing a relationship that creates a $3.9 billion trade surplus domestically. “I am pleased to nominate Herschel Walker as United States Ambassador to the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. Herschel has spent decades serving as an Ambassador to our Nation’s youth, our men and women in the Military, and athletes at home and abroad,” Trump wrote in a nod to Walker’s two-year stint as co-chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports under his first administration.

Trump went on: “A successful businessman, philanthropist, former Heisman Trophy winner, and NFL Great, Herschel has been a tireless advocate for youth sports. During my First Term, he served as Co-Chair of the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness, and Nutrition. Herschel has traveled to over 400 Military installations around the World, removing the stigma surrounding mental health. He represented the United States at the 1992 Winter Olympics as a member of the U.S. bobsled team. Congratulations Herschel! You will make Georgia, and our entire Nation, proud, because we know you will always put AMERICA FIRST!”

Walker is a legendary figure in southern football, having won the Heisman Trophy as a junior running back at the University of Georgia. He established the Dallas Cowboys’ 1990s dynasty, playing with the team for six of his 12 seasons in the NFL and earning consecutive Pro Bowl and second-team All-Pro honors from 1987 to 1988. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1999. In 2022, President-elect Trump endorsed Walker’s first bid for office to unseat U.S. Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA), but the former football pro was dogged by several scandals while being outspent 2-1, according to an NBC News report on his loss that year.

Walker’s turnaround in fortune is another indication that staying loyal to Trump has paid off for allies who stuck by him during the darkest times. He did not criticize Trump for asking questions about the state’s 2020 election results, even as Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis charged Trump and 18 co-defendants with election interference. Walker has stayed mostly quiet since his campaign.

According to the State Department, about 80% of tourists to the Bahamas come from the United States. The two nations’ total trade relationship is about $7.3 billion annually. Reuters reported that the U.S. has had diplomatic relations with the Bahamas since it was granted independence from the U.K. in 1973.
