JUST IN: House Democrat Files Articles Of Impeachment Against Trump
Rep. Shri Thanedar (D-MI) filed articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump on Monday, accusing him of defying a unanimous U.S. Supreme Court ruling related to the deportation of a Salvadoran national alleged to be a member of MS-13.
“Donald Trump has already done real damage to our democracy. But defying a unanimous 9-0 Supreme Court ruling? That has to be the final straw. It’s time we impeach Donald J. Trump.” Thanedar said on Monday.
The action stems from the deportation of Kilmar Armando Ábrego García, a Salvadoran national removed from the United States on March 15. U.S. officials cited a 2019 police report alleging ties to the MS-13 gang as justification for the deportation. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously on April 10 that Ábrego García’s removal was “unlawful” and that he must be allowed the opportunity to return and receive due process in the United States.
Thanedar and other critics allege that Trump ignored the decision, defying the Constitution and the nation’s judicial authority. “Trump ignored it. He ignored the Constitution. He ignored the very checks and balances that keep our democracy intact,” Thanedar said. “This isn’t an isolated incident. It’s part of a dangerous, deliberate pattern.”
WATCH:
The controversy centers on differing interpretations of the Supreme Court’s ruling in the Ábrego García case. While the Court ordered the government to “facilitate” the Salvadoran national’s return, it stopped short of mandating that the government “effectuate” it — leaving a legal gray area that Trump’s administration has used to defend its actions. Initially held in El Salvador’s notorious maximum-security prison, CECOT, Ábrego García was later transferred to a less harsh facility as legal proceedings played out.
The impeachment resolution includes seven articles of impeachment against Trump, alleging widespread constitutional violations:
- Obstruction of Justice and Abuse of Executive Power: Including unlawful deportations, denial of due process, and defiance of court orders.
- Usurpation of Appropriations Power: Alleging the dismantling of congressionally established agencies and impounding federal funds without authority.
- Abuse of Trade Powers and International Aggression: Highlighting economically damaging tariffs and threats of military invasion against sovereign nations.
- Violation of First Amendment Rights: Through alleged retaliation against critics, journalists, and attorneys.
- Creation of an Unlawful Office: Citing the creation of the Department of Government Efficiency (“DOGE”) and granting Elon Musk unconstitutional authority.
- Bribery and Corruption: Accusing Trump of dismissing criminal cases and soliciting foreign emoluments for political and personal gain.
- Tyrannical Overreach: Asserting Trump sought to consolidate unchecked executive power and erode civil liberties.
“Donald Trump has repeatedly demonstrated that he is unfit to serve as President and represents a clear and present danger to our nation’s constitution and our democracy,” said Thanedar in a statement. “We cannot wait for more damage to be done. Congress must act.”
Despite the fiery rhetoric, the effort faces certain defeat. With Republicans maintaining control of both the House and Senate, the articles are unlikely to advance past initial committee stages. It marks the first impeachment attempt by House Democrats this year.
Thanedar, who represents Michigan’s 13th Congressional District — covering Detroit and surrounding areas — has positioned himself as a vocal critic of Trump’s immigration and judicial policies. “This is not about partisanship. It’s about protecting our democracy and ensuring that no one, not even a President, is above the law,” he insisted Monday.
