JUST IN: Israeli PM Netanyahu Nominates Trump For Nobel Peace Prize
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally nominated President Donald Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize due to his efforts to broker a ceasefire to the Israel-Iran conflict last month.
The announcement was made as the two world leaders met at the White House on Monday in order to discuss current events in the Middle East. While speaking with reporters, Prime Minister Netanyahu praised Trump for his efforts to disable Iran’s nuclear program and thanked him for his support.
“I want to express the appreciation and admiration not only of all Israelis, but of the Jewish people and many, many admirers around the world, for your leadership, your leadership of the free world, your leadership of a just cause, and the pursuit of peace and security,” he said. “The president has an extraordinary team, and I think our teams, together, make, an extraordinary combination to meet challenges and seize opportunities.
“But the president has already realized great opportunities. He forged the Abraham Accords. He’s forging peace as we speak, in one country and one region after the other,” Netanyahu continued. “So, I want to present to you, Mr. President, the letter I sent to the Nobel Prize committee. It’s nominating you for the peace prize, which is well-deserved.”
While meeting with the president and senior members of his cabinet, Netanyahu announced that he had nominated Trump for the peace prize in a letter to the Nobel Prize Committee. Trump thanked Netanyahu for the nomination, telling reporters that it was unexpected.
A little under 48 hours after the U.S. launched strikes on Iranian nuclear sites, which was followed by a thwarted Iranian missile attack on a U.S. airbase in Qatar, the president shocked the world by announcing that both sides had agreed to a ceasefire. Under terms of the deal, both sides would cease hostilities within the next 24 hours.
At one point, the deal appeared to be on the verge of collapse, after Israel prepared a fierce retaliation for an Iranian rocket reportedly fired after the ceasefire. Trump was enraged by the decision, telling reporters that he was “not happy” with Israel and that both sides “don’t know what the f**k they’re doing” in a fiery statement.
The deal ultimately went through, however, and the two sides have refrained from further hostilities since then.
Trump has already received a Nobel Peace Prize nomination from the Pakistani government due to his efforts in negotiating a ceasefire between India and Pakistan earlier this year.
“President Trump demonstrated great strategic foresight and stellar statesmanship through robust diplomatic engagement with both Islamabad and New Delhi, which de-escalated a rapidly deteriorating situation,” the Pakistani government said. “This intervention stands as a testament to his role as a genuine peacemaker.”
