JUST IN: Kari Lake Is ‘Top Contender’ For Key Trump Admin Post
Kari Lake’s political ambitions may have found new life, even after back-to-back election losses in Arizona. The former news anchor and a fixture in Trump-aligned Republican circles is now being considered for a prominent role in a potential second Trump administration, according to sources familiar with the discussions.
Lake, who has long been one of President-elect Donald Trump’s most visible allies, is reportedly a top contender for the position of U.S. ambassador to Mexico. The consideration, first reported by Semafor, comes as Trump’s team begins vetting loyalists for key posts ahead of the 2025 transition should the former president secure victory in next year’s election.
Known for her unwavering support of Trump’s border policies and her frequent media presence, Lake has cultivated a political brand centered on aggressive immigration enforcement and election integrity rhetoric. Her alignment with Trump’s vision earned her endorsements in both of her recent campaigns—first in the 2022 Arizona gubernatorial race, and more recently in her unsuccessful Senate bid against Democrat Ruben Gallego (D-AZ).
Despite those defeats, Lake’s prominence within Trump’s orbit has not diminished. Her outspoken stance on border security resonates deeply with Trump’s priorities, particularly as immigration and the U.S.-Mexico relationship are expected to be central issues in a potential second term. Her potential appointment could send a clear signal on his administration’s approach to Mexico: one likely marked by stricter border enforcement and renewed negotiations over immigration and trade.
Should Lake be formally nominated, it would mark a significant shift in her political trajectory—from state-level races to the international stage. For now, her candidacy for the ambassadorship remains part of Trump’s broader effort to position his closest allies for influential roles in his return to the White House.
Last week Lake shot down swirling rumors that she was in talks to join Newsmax, calling the report “absolute fake news” in a fiery appearance on Steve Bannon’s War Room. “That reporting yesterday was absolutely fake news,” Lake told Bannon.
WATCH:
“Think about how bad the media is. You cannot hate them enough, Steve.” Lake detailed the sequence of events that led to the false report, saying both she and Newsmax denied the claims before the story was published. “They reached out to me, asked if I was negotiating with Newsmax. I said, no, you know, get better sources. You’re wrong. Apparently, they reached out to Newsmax. Newsmax said it’s false, and they run the story anyway.”
“We cannot possibly have enough ire toward the absolute fake news that we already have. Thankfully, it’s starting to collapse. They’ll just run any fake hit piece for clicks to try to disparage me, and I’m used to it.” Lake likened her treatment by the press to the relentless scrutiny faced by President-elect Donald Trump.
As for her own plans, Lake said she’s taking time to recharge after spearheading a grassroots movement in Arizona for the past three and a half years. However, she made it clear she’s not stepping away from the political stage. “I will tell the people listening this, especially if you’ve got some of the leftists who despise our movement, I’m not going away,” Lake declared. “As much as they want me to go away, I am not going away. And so they can’t get rid of me.”
“They can write as many nasty stories about me, filled with lies as they want. We are not going away.”
