Republican National Committee co-chair Lara Trump is torching Vice President Kamala Harris for allegedly concocting a “highly illegal” campaign fundraising scheme that involved parents and teachers in the swing state of North Carolina.
Writing on Instagram, the wife of Eric Trump warned parents that left-leaning teachers in Gaston, N.C. are emailing their students encouraging them to sign up to volunteer with the Harris campaign. She cites a screenshot of an email from Reed Breunig, Regional Organizer for the Harris campaign, to teachers in Gaston offering their students an “exciting opportunity” to get involved in a “local political campaign.” Breunig states that he is responsible for helping the Harris campaign coordinate its voter outreach efforts with Democratic candidates down the ballot.

“The North Carolina Democratic Party is looking for high school students interested in getting involved with the campaign and learning a bit more about local, state and national politics,” he writes. The offer includes a “fellowship” that requires “roughly 5-10 hours a week” where students would work alongside Democratic operatives on “talking with voters, helping to run the office, and the day-to-day business of the campaign.” The opportunity doesn’t include a paycheck, but he offered to “sign off for volunteer hours and school credit.”

According to the North Carolina state Office of Human Resources, public employees are prohibited from “engaging in political activity (including without limitation taking an active part in managing a campaign) while on duty or during work hours, and the statute prohibits covered employees from using state resources or the authority of a state position to secure support for (or oppose) any political candidates.” If Breunig’s emails were sent to teachers’ official work accounts, it might constitute a use of official resources if those teachers passed along the opportunity to their students. “The Gaston County School Board has reportedly shut this down and is currently investigating the matter,” Lara Trump wrote in her post.
The latest state polls show Trump and Harris engaged in a neck-and-neck race for North Carolina. The former president leads Harris just 46.5% to 46%, according to an amalgam of results compiled by FiveThirtyEight. A majority of polls between August and September give Trump a slim lead of 1 to 3%.
Under orders from the Trump campaign, the RNC has been heavily focused on election integrity efforts in the run-up to the November 5th election. Legions of lawyers have been deployed in battleground states to combat allegations of voter fraud while House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) has pushed legislation requiring nationwide proof of identification at the polls. Since leaving office, President Trump has asserted the 2020 election was stolen and blamed election workers in Arizona and Georgia for failing to count a number of ballots he said would have shown him to have won both states. All suits brought by the Trump campaign to contest the results were eventually dismissed.
