JUST IN: Boeing Plane Crashes With 242 On Board
A large airliner traveling from India to London crashed in the early hours of Thursday morning shortly after takeoff. Now, rescuers are racing to sift through the wreckage and determine if anyone survived the impact.
A Boeing 787-8 airplane with 242 passengers on board appears so far to be a catastrophic loss of life. The city police commissioner in Ahmedabad briefed the media at a press conference, saying there may be no survivors of the plane crash.
“It appears there are no survivors in the plane crash,” Commissioner G.S. Malik told the AP.
With the plane crashing into residential areas of the city shortly after takeoff, “some locals would have also died,” he added.
“Exact figures on casualties are being ascertained,” he said.
Video shows residents running toward black plumes of smoke that shot up after the India Air jet came crashing down, engulfing homes and apartment buildings at the crash site. One site included a hostel for doctors, according to Reuters.

A senior police officer told the outlet that 70% to 80% of the area has been cleared, and they are working to clear the rest. Air India, meanwhile, wrote on X that it has resumed limited flights following the crash.
The incident sent shockwaves through the populous country where air travel has exploded in recent years, all while the safety of Boeing jets has come into question and Air India has dealt with its own set of crashes.
The India-based air travel company was purchased by conglomerate Tata Group in 2022, which was widely regarded as a historic homecoming, CNN reported. Air India was founded by J.R.D. Tata in 1932 before being nationalized by the Indian government in 1953.
Prior to its purchase, Air India was beset by debt and high-profile crashes, including the 2020 crash of an Air India Express plane, which killed at least 18. Another Air India Boeing 737 aircraft crashed in 2018 after hitting a wall shortly after takeoff.
One of the country’s deadliest plane crashes occurred in 2010 when 158 people were killed after an Air India jet overshot a runway during landing.
In a social media statement, Boeing said it is “ready to support” victims’ families and the employees of Air India.
“Our thoughts are with the passengers, crew, first responders and all affected,” it added in an X post.
