JUST IN: Major Development Hints At Trump’s Possible VP Pick

Published

on

As supporters of former President Donald Trump anxiously await his selection for a vice presidential running mate, online sleuths have unearthed evidence of a website domain that may indicate his choice is already made.

Users of X on Thursday located a URL tying the former president to Doug Burgum, the popular governor of North Dakota and former Republican presidential candidate who self-funded his run before it came to an end late last year. The friendly, earnest midwestern governor has won plaudits for packaging the MAGA brand in a style that allies of Trump say will appeal to key voters he could struggle to win over in November, including suburban women. Philip Reichert with the American Conservation Coalition was the first to discover that www.trumpburgum.com is up and running and redirects to President Trump’s main campaign page.

Republican political operative John William Schiffbauer was quick to note that “neither TrumpVance, TrumpScott, TrumpRubio, TrumpStefanik, nor any of the other three vetted Veep domains redirects,” all references to other Republicans widely believed to be under consideration for the number two spot.

Reichert followed up by pointing out that those domains are still reserved, meaning another could be activated at any time if the nominee does turn out to be someone besides Burgum.

According to ICANN, the online tool that tracks domain registration data, TrumpBurgum.com was registered by a creator in Iceland and dates back to September 2023. If the creator has no knowledge of who Trump will pick, oftentimes such a move is referred to as domain parking, or the deliberate purchasing of a URL that will later become popular. Large campaigns or corporations in need of a specific URL may quietly purchase it from the owner. A similar mishap befell Facebook during its 2021 transition to Meta; the name change unfortunately conflicted with an existing corporation and domain, www.meta.com.

And yet, it’s possible that Governor Burgum indeed is the pick that President Trump has made. A purchase of TrumpBurgum.com may already have occurred and the domain directed to Trump’s homepage in advance of a pending announcement before next month’s Republican National Convention. The event will largely be a coronation of Trump and Burgum would play a cheerleading role, something he has already done outside of Trump’s Manhattan trial and across various battleground states as he stumped for the campaign.

Undulations in the VP pool have favored the North Dakota governor as of lately, but allies of Trump are quick to point out that others are not out of the running yet. Insiders say the president has remained impressed with Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) for his vocal defense as Trump continues to wage war against Jack Smith in his Florida-based classified documents trial, according to The Hill. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who became a household name after holding Ivy League presidents accountable for antisemitism on campus, remains another option for Trump to better appeal to suburban women and moms.

The Trump campaign in recent days has asked a number of high-profile Republicans for background documents, according to ABC News, typically the first step in vetting candidates under serious consideration. The escalation indicates who’s in and who’s out with the mercurial leader these days. Also on the shortlist are GOP Senators J.D. Vance (R-OH) and Tim Scott (R-SC), Reps. Byron Donalds (R-FL) and neurosurgeon Ben Carson. Further parlor talk about whom might be at the front of the pack is nothing more, said an aide to Trump who added the final decision would be his.
