The Martin County Sheriff’s Office has released body-cam footage of the arrest of Ryan Wesley Routh, the 58-year-old Democrat donor accused of attempting to assassinate former President Donald Trump. Routh, who is facing federal charges for possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm with an obstructed serial number, was apprehended without incident after surrendering to law enforcement.

The footage, made public today, shows a tense but controlled situation as deputies ordered Routh to slowly walk backward with his hands on his head toward the deputies. The suspect complied, allowing the authorities to safely detain him.

Routh’s arrest stems from the assassination attempt targeting Trump, marking the second attempt on the former president’s life in two months. Although details surrounding the incident remain limited, sources confirmed that Trump was immediately rushed to safety and was unharmed.

The weapon found in Routh’s possession, with its obstructed serial number, suggests an effort to conceal its origins, leading to concerns over the implications of how Routh obtained it. As a convicted felon, Routh was already prohibited from owning or possessing firearms.

Authorities say that Routh targeted Trump during a round of golf. Secret Service agents fired at a man in the bushes near the course, and he was apprehended later on a nearby highway. Routh grew disillusioned with the former president, calling him an “idiot” and a “buffoon.” He had expressed his disappointment on social media, later admitting he had made a mistake by supporting Trump in 2016. Routh’s political writings, which include a self-published book, discuss global politics, including Ukraine, Taiwan, and North Korea. He criticized Trump’s withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal, blaming it for strengthening Russia’s relationship with Iran according to CNN.

Routh’s personal life is riddled with a history of legal trouble, including past arrests and civil suits for unpaid taxes. Despite his increasingly radicalized views, those who knew him were shocked by his actions. His eldest son described him as a “loving and caring father,” while others recounted tense interactions, including a dispute with a business client in Hawaii. Routh’s support for Ukraine was a central part of his political beliefs. He visited the country in 2022, claiming to recruit volunteers for the Ukrainian cause, though military officials dismissed his claims as “delusional.”

In what’s shaping up as one of the most chaotic presidential campaigns in American history, Trump is set to rejoin the campaign trail after surviving the assassination attempt in Florida, just 50 days before the election with early ballots already being distributed in several states.

Trump, unharmed and continuing his campaign efforts, commended the Secret Service on Monday for their swift action in ensuring his safety during the incident. However, he didn’t hold back in pointing fingers, claiming that remarks by Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris, labeling him a “threat to democracy,” directly inspired the attempt on his life.

Trump wrote, “The Rhetoric, Lies, as exemplified by the false statements made by Comrade Kamala Harris during the rigged and highly partisan ABC Debate, and all of the ridiculous lawsuits specifically designed to inflict damage on Joe’s, then Kamala’s, Political Opponent, ME, has taken politics in our Country to a whole new level of Hatred, Abuse, and Distrust.”
