JUST IN: Search For Nancy Guthrie Shifts To Mexico After New Ransom Note Is Revealed
The FBI has contacted their counterparts in Mexico regarding the disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie as the investigation drags though its third week.
The latest development follows unverified ransom demands that suggested a possible connection to Mexico, including one note mentioning “south of the border,” according to a report from TMZ. Sources familiar with the investigation told the outlet that the FBI is probing whether Guthrie was abducted to Mexico, though it is believed that this did not take place immediately after the disappearance.
A new alleged note received by TMZ claimed Guthrie was taken to Mexico, adding to previous communications. Local authorities have not confirmed these claims and continue to treat them as potential hoaxes while forwarding all tips to the FBI.
Throughout the course of the investigation, multiple alleged ransom notes have been sent to a number of media outlets, including TMZ. The FBI has not verified the authenticity of any of the notes, though they have investigated them as serious threats.
Nancy Guthrie, an 84-year-old resident of Tucson, Arizona, and mother of NBC’s “Today” show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie, disappeared from her home in the city’s affluent Catalina Foothills section on February 1. Authorities believe she was taken against her will, based on evidence including signs of forced entry.
Surveillance footage from Guthrie’s home captured a masked individual believed to be the abductor, described by the FBI as a male approximately 5 feet 9 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with an average build. Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos has indicated the suspect likely had a specific target in mind, with possible ties to the Tucson area.
Forensic efforts include DNA analysis from gloves found about two miles from the home, which resemble those in the video but produced no matches in the national CODIS database or to samples from the residence. Due to local lab constraints, some samples were sent to Phoenix, and genealogy testing is underway to pursue leads.
Guthrie also wears a pacemaker, prompting the use of helicopter-mounted technology to scan for signals, though no detections have been publicly confirmed.
The Guthrie family, including Savannah Guthrie and her siblings along with their spouses, has been fully cleared as suspects. Sheriff Nanos has emphasized their cooperation and described suggestions otherwise as “cruel.”
The reward for information leading to her safe return stands at $100,000, as updated by the FBI. As of February 18 — marking 18 days since her disappearance — no suspects have been publicly identified, and the investigation remains active
