JUST IN: Top VP Candidate Wipes Schedule Clean, Becomes Odds-On Favorite For Kamala’s Selection

Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro has abruptly canceled his plans to visit the Hamptons, where he was scheduled to rub shoulders with affluent donors. The Democrat was slated to attend at least two high-profile events, including a meet and greet at the luxurious home of well-known public relations executive Mike Kempner.

The sudden change in plans is now fueling speculation about his political future as he possibly prepares to step onto the national stage. The cancellation comes amid whispers that he’s being considered as a running mate for Vice President Kamala Harris, according to sources familiar with the matter who spoke to CNBC News.

“The Governor’s trip was planned several weeks ago and included several fundraisers for his own campaign committee,” Shapiro spokesman Manuel Bonder confirmed to NBC News. “His schedule has changed and he is no longer traveling to the Hamptons this weekend.” The event, planned for Sunday, was to host over 100 guests from various sectors including legal, sports, and finance, according to a source who requested anonymity to discuss the private matter freely with the outlet.

Known for his high approval ratings, Shapiro has been gaining attention as the potential running mate. His appeal in the crucial swing state has made him a favorite among some of Harris’ advisors.  Additionally, Shapiro was slated to attend a fundraiser in East Hampton on Saturday for a group known as The Next 50. The strategic choice of Philadelphia for a week of barnstorm campaigning, announced by Harris’ campaign to start next Tuesday, has only intensified rumors about Shapiro’s potential selection.

The odds are tilting significantly in favor of Shapiro as well. Currently, Shapiro is the frontrunner with odds set at -333, indicating a strong likelihood of his selection according to Oddschecker. Trailing behind him is Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear (+820) and Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) (+1400).

Before his gubernatorial term, Shapiro served as the Attorney General of Pennsylvania. As governor, Shapiro has continued to position himself as a moderate Democrat who prioritizes economic opportunities and public services. His leadership style, often described as hands-on and inclusive, has appealed to a broad spectrum of Pennsylvanians, contributing to his high approval ratings. Shapiro has consistently avoided addressing speculation regarding his possible selection, maintaining a stance of not entertaining “hypotheticals.”

“This is a deeply personal decision that the vice president will make…that decision should be made free of any sort of political pressure,” Shapiro said earlier this month. Many Republicans consider Shapiro to be a strong vice presidential candidate for Harris. Not only did Shapiro secure a landslide victory in 2022 against Republican State Sen. Doug Mastriano, but he’s also respected as a powerful campaigner and communicator. Importantly, he has managed to maintain this reputation without completely alienating Pennsylvania Republicans.

“I just think Shapiro is super strong,” said an ally of former President Trump to NBC News. “And Republicans should be concerned about it. If I were her, that would be the pick.” As an observant Jew, Shapiro could appeal to disenchanted voters of faith who once supported Democrats but now feel disconnected from the party. This could potentially make him a more compelling candidate than Harris herself. “Shapiro creates a super interesting dynamic,” the person added.
