JUST IN: Trump Announces Historic Greenland Deal

President Donald Trump announced Friday that the United States has entered into a security agreement with the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland, which will give the United States Military full security control of the arctic territory.

The announcement comes after months of back and forth over the issue, with Trump repeatedly stating that U.S. control of the territory is vital for national security interests in both the United States and Europe. He repeatedly threatened to increase tariffs on a number of EU countries, including Denmark, if the issue was not resolved.

In a Truth Social post, the president described Friday’s agreement as a victory that achieves much of his stated goals.

“I am pleased to announce that the United States of America has entered into an Agreement with The Kingdom of Denmark, and Greenland, that gives the United States permanent control over security, and all other needs, in Greenland, completely addressing ALL of our many U.S. concerns,” Trump wrote.

He added that the move will come at no additional costs to the United States. “At my direction, we worked with representatives of Denmark and Greenland to guarantee that the United States will FOREVER have the complete ability to do what is necessary in Greenland in order to secure and defend the security of Greenland, and the United States of America,” the post continued.

In addition, Trump added that U.S. adversaries will be barred from building any military installations, or making sensitive investments in rare earths and other materials, without explicit U.S. approval.

“For over 100 years, Presidents have known the strategic importance of Greenland, but NONE of them were able to do anything about it. I am proud to be the President that permanently and conclusively addressed this very important situation. This is an ‘Infinite Life’ Agreement, there is no end,” the president continued.

“We are very honored and proud of what has just taken place, and everything agreed to today will be cherished by the American People. We will immediately begin the process of developing a large Military presence in the appropriate part of Greenland, of which there are many. We will work with the people of Greenland in its development and construction. This solution is a great one for the United States of America, Denmark, Greenland, and all of our Allies.

According to a senior U.S. official who spoke with Fox News, the agreement grants the United States permanent access, basing, and overflight rights in Greenland, along with the ability to establish additional military installations as needed. Denmark and Greenland would be consulted on new installations but would not have approval authority, while the United States would have the right to proceed when it determines installations are necessary.

The agreement has no expiration date and is intended to remain in effect even if Greenland becomes independent. It does not transfer sovereignty over Greenland to the United States.

The deal bars China, Russia, and other non-NATO countries from establishing military bases or maintaining troops in Greenland. It also restricts adversaries from making investments in sensitive sectors, including telecommunications infrastructure, undersea cables, ports, and critical minerals.

Only the United States and its allies would be permitted to make such investments. Officials said an expanded U.S. military footprint could support the Golden Dome missile defense system.

The arrangement expands on the existing 1951 defense agreement under which the United States already operates Pituffik Space Base.

The Danish government said Denmark, Greenland, and the United States expect to sign an agreement next week in connection with the United Nations General Assembly. The agreement, according to Danish statements, would strengthen joint security in the Arctic and North Atlantic while recognizing the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark and Greenland’s right to self-determination.
