JUST IN: Trump Deploys 2,000 Additional Troops As LA Unrest Enters Fourth Day
President Donald Trump is deploying an additional 2,000 California National Guard personnel to Los Angeles as unrest begins to unfold for a fourth straight night.
“At the order of the President, the Department of Defense is mobilizing an additional 2,000 California National Guard to be called into federal service to support ICE & to enable federal law-enforcement officers to safely conduct their duties,” Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell announced Monday night.
President Trump had already deputized 2,000 National Guard personnel to defend federal property after Los Angeles Police Department and County Sheriff’s assets failed to defend immigration agents from violent mobs. California Governor Gavin Newsom on Monday filed a lawsuit aimed at stopping the president’s deployment, which he referred to as “illegal.”
Earlier in the day Monday, 700 U.S. Marines were mobilized in order to bolster the National Guard personnel already on the ground. The Marines will be tasked with protecting federal property and federal personnel, a senior defense official told Fox News, and the deployment is open-ended.
While Marines will be filling a law enforcement role during the deployment, it is unclear what their use of force rules are if they come under attack from rioters. National Guard and Marine Corps personnel will not be able to make arrests unless the president invokes the Insurrection Act, which grants the president broad ability to use the U.S. Military in order to crush an insurrection.

As of 5:26 local time, the LAPD has already issued a citywide tactical alert and declared an unlawful assembly in the area around city hall. According to on-the-ground reporter Anthony Cabassa, police have blocked off all entrance points to the U.S. Route 101 Freeway, which was overtaken by rioters on Sunday night.
Far-left extremists could be seen dropping boulders, fireworks and Molotov cocktails on police who moved in to clear rioters from the northbound lane. Police were ultimately forced to retreat and abandon multiple police vehicles due to the intensity of the attack.
The police response appears to be more robust from the outset on Monday night, according to Cabassa. “Protesters have been ordered to disperse as the protest has been deemed an unlawful assembly. This is the most prepared/manned I’ve seen LE in 4 days of protests,” he said.
As of 5:47 p.m., police had already started to move the crowd away from the federal building in downtown Los Angeles, which is being guarded by National Guard personnel.
Explosions could be heard as rioters started to toss objects and clash with police for the fourth night in a row. Law enforcement responded with less-than-lethal crowd control measures as they moved the crowd away from federal personnel.
In one instance, an unidentified rioter drove past the federal building and shot an LA County deputy in the face with a paintball gun.
