New Year’s Eve was not all champagne and celebration at the party of former President Donald Trump, who took a moment to update the sizable crowd on why his wife, former First Lady Melania Trump, was not present.
A bow-tied Trump emerged hours before the clock struck midnight to announce that Melania was spending the evening with her mother, who is “very ill” and remains hospitalized with an undisclosed illness. The ordeal is taking its toll on his family, but both his wife and mother-in-law are fighters, Trump added.
“Melania—great First Lady, so popular, the people love her—she’s now in a hospital with her mother. Her mother, Amalija, is very ill, but hopefully she’ll be recovering,” Trump said, adding that Melania “sends her love.”
“But she’s been very ill, so I just want to say ‘hello’ to the First Lady—we just spoke, down in Miami, great hospital—and hopefully they’ll be ok, but it’s a tough one, it’s a very tough one. She knows probably about 95 percent of the people in this room. We just want to wish Amalija that she gets better as quickly as possible.”
Page Six added to the intrigue when it reported that Melania was absent from the family’s Christmas photo this year because she remained at her mother’s bedside. Another source told Fox News that the former First Lady “always been very devoted to her entire family.”
“It should be no surprise that she spent this Christmas with her ailing mother,” the source said.
President Trump has relied on Melania to be his “secret weapon” while enduring four criminal trials. She has demanded he sit with the family each morning for breakfast and has kept her husband from watching too much cable TV, outlets have previously reported.
“Friends whisper these last few weeks have been hard on Trump, and although he always presents a tough front, these constant legal assaults are affecting his day-to-day life,” said one source close to the power couple. “Melania’s even better than his regular golf games at keeping his temper in check. She provides a peaceful life for him when he needs it.”
Despite her mother’s health ailments, Melania has occasionally emerged on the campaign trail, offering her thoughts on a vice presidential pick and keynoting a ceremony granting citizenship to legal immigrants.
