Justin Timberlake, the iconic pop singer and actor, has been arrested for allegedly driving while intoxicated in the glitzy Hamptons, a seaside getaway for New York’s rich and famous.

Timberlake was behind the wheel while driving through Sag Harbor when local police pulled over his vehicle on suspicion of DWI. He was booked and released early Tuesday morning and will appear in court for his arraignment later that day, according to ABC News. Depending on the severity of the offense, first-time drunk drivers in Long Island may receive a fine between $1,000 and $2,500, up to one year in jail, and a mandatory loss of driver’s license for one year, according to the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The “Cry Me a River” star is in the middle of a global tour that continues in Chicago on Friday night and finishes in Kansas City, Missouri in December. He is booked to perform two sell-out shows at New York City’s Madison Square Garden next week, according to his website. “The Forget Tomorrow World Tour” comes after the release of his sixth studio album, “Everything I Thought It Was,” which has received largely positive reviews from critics and fans alike.

Timberlake, 43, has avoided the long arm of the law for most of his adult life though he has been found guilty of lesser offenses in the court of public opinion. He briefly dated Britney Spears around the turn of the century, cementing the couple as pop’s king and queen before Timberlake broke off the relationship amid charges of infidelity. “We’re not perfect. I don’t judge anybody,” Timberlake told Barbara Walters in 2002. “It’s just young love. It was a very intense relationship, that’s for sure.” Spears later published a memoir where she accused Timberlake of “trying to distance himself” in the relationship and encouraging her to seek an abortion.

In February 2004, Timberlake joined Janet Jackson for a Super Bowl halftime show that went down in infamy after he exposed her right breast while making salacious dance moves on stage. The appearance became widely referred to as “Nipplegate” and led to both singers being sidelined for several years. The 2017 #MeToo movement led cultural commentators to revisit the incident, and one year later Timberlake released an apology and claimed he “absolutely” made peace with Jackson, according to Us Weekly.
