Katy Perry Suffers Embarrassing Wardrobe Malfunction
During Monday’s live broadcast of “American Idol,” pop superstar Katy Perry experienced an unexpected wardrobe malfunction that momentarily stole the spotlight from the musical performances. The ordeal occurred while Perry was judging contestant performances alongside fellow judges Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie.
As Roman Collins took the stage to perform James Brown’s “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” Perry’s metallic, futuristic top began to come apart at the seams—quite literally. Designed by Kate Barton, the silver crop top seemed ill-prepared for the rigors of live television, leading to a flurry of activity to rectify the situation.
Caught by the cameras, Perry quipped about the mishap, “That song, uh, broke my top off!” Her quick wit turned the potential embarrassment into a humorous highlight of the episode. Behind the scenes, Perry was surrounded by crew members and stylists, including Bryan, who attempted to assist with a pair of scissors before thinking better of it.
“I guess it is a woman’s world,” Perry joked. Bryan, embracing the moment, exclaimed, “Ratings! Here we come ratings!”

Perry later addressed the incident on Instagram, posting a video that showed the off-camera efforts to fix her top. “My top broke #idol,” she wrote in the caption.
This isn’t the first time Perry has faced such challenges on “American Idol.” She humorously remarked to Access Hollywood, “It seems like every season, I’m either tearing the seam of my pants or… I’m just super expressive physically!”

Perry’s decision to wear the bold outfit was intentional, fully aware of the risks involved. “I wouldn’t call it a malfunction, I’ll just call it an interesting moment on live television,” she said.
The episode continued without further incident, but not before Perry could be seen jokingly hiding behind a pillow and then ducking below the judge’s table to ensure her modesty. Despite the occasional wardrobe slip-up, Perry’s tenure on “American Idol” has been marked by memorable moments that have contributed to the show’s ongoing appeal.
Perry will leave “American Idol” after its 22nd season, she announced on “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” Perry, who joined the show in its 16th season, said she plans to travel and focus on new music projects. Perry described her connection to the show and its role in linking her to America’s heart, but said it is time to “go out and feel that pulse to my own beat.” This season, which began Feb. 18, marks her seventh.
