On Friday’s installment of HBO’s Real Time with Bill Maher, the titular host sat with Kid Rock and other guests for a discussion that included some personal anecdotes involving President Donald Trump.

During the segment, Maher turned to Kid Rock and asked about his experiences with the president. “Bob, you’ve gotten to know Trump personally over the years. What’s something about him that people would be surprised to learn? Oh, you want to tell the Macron story?” Maher asked.

Kid Rock initially responded, “The what?” To which Maher clarified, “The Macron, the golf cart story.”

Kid Rock then recounted the episode. “Oh yeah, that was funny. Yeah, we’re out golfing, and I hate speaking out of school, but this is just a fun one. And I mean, the guy’s taking calls all day. He’s working while you’re golfing. The guy does not stop working. I think we can all agree on that. He works. He sleeps like maybe four or five hours a night, right?” he said.

Continuing, Kid Rock described the scene on the course. “So we’re out there. Macron calls. He’s like, blah, blah, blah. He’s talking. We’re on the golf cart, right? I’m standing next to his golf cart. He’s like, ‘Hey, I’m here with the great Kid Rock,’ like Macron knows who I am. And he’s like, ‘Bob, say hello.’ So he gives me the phone.”

The rocker added that he then “took over” the call with the French president. “I’m like, ‘Hello, Mr. President.’ And I’m like, ‘I’m from the Paris of the Midwest, Détroit.’ And Trump leaves!”

As Kid Rock delivered the punchline about Trump driving off in the golf cart and leaving him on the line with French President Emmanuel Macron, Maher began laughing and pounding the table. “I love that,” Maher bellowed. The exchange drew laughter from the rest of the panel as well.

According to the account shared on the program, Kid Rock had previously told Maher the same story in private, yet the retelling still produced the same response from the host. No further details about the date of the golf outing or the content of Macron’s call were provided during the segment.

Maher noted the length of the message, saying, “Did you see the 1,300-word tweet he sent out? Longest ever. Kind of a flex.”

He compared the experience of dining at the White House to other situations, stating, “Dining at the White House is the opposite of the Cheesecake Factory. After you leave, they review you,” and added, “He went off on me like Kelly Clarkson in a toy store.”

Maher further described the sequence as, “Eating with Trump is like dating Taylor Swift. It’s a lot of laughs at the time, but later on they’re tearing you a new asshole.”
