White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre was hit with an embarrassing fact check after claiming that food and travel costs have declined under President Biden.

“This Thanksgiving, we’re seeing important progress on inflation, with prices lower for: Thanksgiving dinner, gas, airline tickets, car rentals, toys, TVs,” Jean-Pierre wrote in an X post just before the Thanksgiving holiday on Wednesday.

In an accompanying video post, Jean-Pierre said the country has “a-lot to be thankful for” before absolving the president of any responsibility for inflation. “While inflation caused by the pandemic and Russia’s war continues to be a challenge, we have seen important progress. Just in time for holiday travel, gas prices are down $1.70 from their peak. Airline tickets are down 13% over the last year, and car rentals are down about 10%. And as we start preparing our Thanksgiving meals, grocery inflation is at its lowest level in over two years, with prices for eggs, milks, bacon, and fresh veggies lower than last year,” she said.

The White House press secretary went on to claim that this year’s holiday was the “fourth cheapest Thanksgiving ever.”

Shortly after the post went live, it was slapped with a “Community Note,” which allows Twitter users to fact check claims in real time. The community can then rate the note as “helpful” or “unhelpful.”

“This claim compares prices to last year, a point in the middle of Biden’s term. Even then, food prices are not lower as claimed,” the note reads before linking to U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics. The administration’s own statistics revealed that food prices have increased over just the last month and debunked other claims made by Jean-Pierre.

The brief note also addressed the fact that prices remain sky-high compared to when Biden took office in January 2021. The administration has consistently pointed to last year’s numbers and claimed that inflation is “down,” a message that does not appear to be resonating with the American people, according to months of polling data.

“Compared to the beginning of Biden’s term, all prices remain significantly higher. Gas, for example, remains up 36% since Biden took office,” the note continues while linking to a chart.
