Legal Expert Makes CNN Panel Explode With Reminder That Trump Was Unfairly Targeted
A CNN panelist sent his liberal colleagues into apoplexy after arguing that President-elect Donald Trump and his family were the unfair focus of the J6 committee, four criminal cases, and two civil cases, three of which saw him found guilty. Even if President Joe Biden never led the charge from the podium, the “lawfare” was led by administration officials tacitly following his orders, criminal defense attorney Arthur Aidala explained.
A clip of the interaction, grabbed by the Daily Caller, shows Aidala running circles around fellow panelists who rushed to the defense of Liz Cheney, the Republican former congresswoman who co-chaired a congressional investigation into the January 6th, 2021 riots at the Capitol and laid the brunt of the blame at Trump’s feet for violence that occurred that day. Biden on Thursday awarded Cheney with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, citing her commitment “to defend our Nation and the ideals we stand for: Freedom. Dignity. And decency.”

When former Rep. Joe Walsh of Illinois urged Biden to pardon Cheney to “protect” her from a vindictive Trump, Aidala quickly reminded the anti-Trump Republican that it was Biden’s Justice Department who launched sweeping cases against Trump and members of his family. “Joe Biden should try to pardon as many people as possible to protect from a guy who said, ‘I want to be an authoritarian,’” Walsh said, prompting Aidala to respond, “I know, but, congressman, his — the Democratic administration just went after Trump and his whole family. His whole family.”
“Wait, wait,” Walsh said, with CNN host Abby Phillip asking, “Hang on. What do you mean, the Democratic administration? What are you talking about?” Panelist Cari Champion objected, asking Aidala to name who had “gone after” Trump, eliciting laughs from the panel. “Last I looked, Joe Biden is a Democrat. Last I looked, the attorney general, Merrick Garland, is a Democrat,” Aidala responded. “They hired a special prosecutor who went after him in several jurisdictions. The Democratic Manhattan D.A. went after him. The Democratic attorney general of the state of New York went after him.”
WATCH:
During the J6 inquiry, members of the Trump family, including daughter Ivanka, husband Jared Kushner, and son Donald Jr., were subpoenaed to testify about statements or actions made by Trump that could have provoked supporters to charge the Capitol building, attack police officers on their way to prevent certification of the 2020 election. Even though Biden was not the one calling for Trump’s prosecution, it was his subordinates who pursued Trump with zeal, Aidala retorted.
“The Democrats went after Donald Trump and his entire family,” Aidala said, prompting former Hillary Clinton campaign aide Amanda Litman to say, “It was not President Joe Biden saying, ‘I’m going to put Donald Trump…’”
“It’s his administration. It’s his administration. And it’s his entire family,” Aidala responded. “Ivanka had to testify. Donald Jr. had to testify. Eric had to testify.”
Indeed, court evidence appears to show that senior officials in the Biden White House were being looped in about some of President-elect Trump’s ongoing trials. During a court hearing for one of Trump’s co-defendants in the Georgia election interference case, a defense attorney produced White House visitor logs showing Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis, a Democrat, visited with Vice President Kamala Harris just before charging Trump. Similarly, New York state Attorney General Letitia James, who vowed to “get” Trump after being elected in 2019, visited the White House for a reception with Harris in August of 2023, just months before she brought her civil case against Trump alleging he illegally inflated the value of his real estate portfolio.
Trump has vowed to pursue prosecutions against James, Willis, and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg, and allies have laid out a legal strategy by which it could be accomplished. Steve Bannon, speaking with Axios in June of 2024, said Trump could rely on existing civil rights laws to charge the trio of Democratic prosecutors. “Of course [Bragg] should be — and will be — jailed,” Bannon told the outlet, describing how many in the MAGA movement feel about the Manhattan district attorney who oversaw Trump’s hush money prosecution. To get there, Bannon argued, Trump could rely on the 14th Amendment (equal protection) and Fourth Amendment (outlawing unreasonable searches and seizures by the government) “plus scores of other” laws. The “War Room” host suggested a lawfare probe should include “investigations to include [Democrats’] media allies.”
