The comedy world has lost one of its enduring figures. Known for his sharp wit and mastery of timing, Dick Capri was a mainstay of the Borscht Belt scene, a beloved comic whose legacy spanned generations. Capri’s son, Jeff, confirmed his death to TMZ, revealing that his father passed away following complications from a bleeding enlarged aorta, which doctors deemed inoperable due to his advanced age.

For decades, Capri brought laughter to audiences across the country, from Catskills resorts to television screens. He carved a unique path in comedy, drawing from his Jewish heritage and the rich tapestry of urban life.

His material resonated deeply with audiences who cherished the Borscht Belt style—equal parts clever observation and self-deprecating humor. Capri’s rise coincided with a golden era for comedians performing at Catskills resorts, where his name became synonymous with top-tier entertainment.

Beyond the Catskills, Capri’s career flourished. He appeared on television variety shows, and performed on Broadway. One of his most notable achievements was starring in Catskills on Broadway, a 1991 production that celebrated the humor and spirit of the famed resort circuit. Capri’s contributions to the show helped bring the unique brand of Borscht Belt comedy to a wider audience.

Throughout his career, Capri has dazzled audiences across a myriad of venues—from arenas to nightclubs, and resorts to historic theaters. His performances have resonated in some of the world’s most famed stages, including Radio City Music Hall, New York’s Minskoff Theater, and the Palladium in London. Capri’s talents have been showcased at the esteemed New York Friar’s Roast and he has had the honor of performing for U.S. Presidents Gerald Ford and George Bush.

Dick Capri’s passing at 93 marks the end of an era, but his humor and influence remain timeless.
