Legendary San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich, who has been away from the team after suffering a stroke back in November, was taken away from a San Antonio restaurant in an ambulance after fainting on Tuesday night.

According to a report from TMZ Sports, Popovich had been dining at the steakhouse for two hours before the fainting incident, which occurred around 8:20 p.m. local time. Officials confirmed they responded to a call about an elderly person who had fainted, adding that the patient was transported to an area hospital with a non-life-threatening injury or illness.

The report added that Popovich was “alert and talking” in the time between the fainting incident and the ambulance’s arrival. The future hall of fame coach is now back home and recovering after being discharged from the hospital, a source familiar with the incident told TMZ Sports.

Popovich had taken a step back to focus on his health after suffering a stroke back in November, leaving assistant head coach Mitch Johnson to run the team in the interim. He suffered the stroke on November 2, just before tip-off ahead of a Spurs clash with the Minnesota Timberwolves.

A few weeks later, Popovich provided an update on his health and confirmed that he will be away from the time for the foreseeable future, though he stressed that je hopes to return to coaching eventually.

“This has certainly been an unexpected six weeks for my family and me,” Popovich posted on X. “As we work together on my recovery, I want to take a moment to share that the outpouring of support we’ve received during this time has been truly overwhelming in the best possible way.”

He continued, “While I wish I could get back to each one of you, for now, let me say that my family and I are forever grateful. We’re thankful for our wonderful community, the entire Spurs organization, and our family and friends.”

Since taking over as head coach of the Spurs in 1996, Popovich has led the team to five NBA championships and 1,338 total wins, the most all time among all coaches.
