Longtime Anchor Out At CNN
The struggles continue at CNN, where another high-profile anchor is departing her perch following a post-election downturn in ratings that is bringing the cable news industry to its knees.
Alisyn Camerota, who has hosted the mid-afternoon “Newsroom” program since April of 2021, announced her departure in a heartfelt message to viewers on Sunday, the Gateway Pundit reports. “Before we go on this very busy news day, I just want to take a moment to share some personal news. This is my last day on air at CNN. I’ve had such incredible opportunities here these past ten-plus years,” said Camerota toward the beginning of the program. “I’ve interviewed presidents and heroes and extraordinary people. The kind of peak career experiences that I had dreamed of since I was a teenager. The journalists at CNN are the very best in the entire news business.”

“And it’s been an honor to have been their colleague. It’s also an honor to have been in your homes this past decade through some of the biggest stories of our lifetimes. I’m always touched when a viewer comes up and tells me that I helped them get through these challenging times,” she added. “So I look forward to doing much more of that with you. Please follow me on Instagram @Alisyn Camerota for updates on where to find me in the very near future. And to my dear friends at CNN, thank you for all of the laughs that we’ve shared, all you’ve taught me about the power of journalism. And for making my time here so deeply rewarding. I wish you all a peaceful holiday season. I’ll see you all soon.”

Cartwright has not said where she’ll land, but anywhere sounds better than CNN, given its dramatic drop in viewership this year. The formerly venerable network has sunk in the ratings, being beat out by the Hallmark Channel as well as Newsmax, a once-unthinkable scenario. During the week of November 18th to the 24th, CNN pulled in just 314,000 regular viewers, putting it even behind MSNBC where sagging ratings are prompting deep cuts to on-air talent.
Both networks have experienced notable drops in audience numbers. MSNBC’s total audience nearly halved post-Election Day, with star anchor Rachel Maddow seeing a 41% decrease in viewers, affecting her program’s performance, especially in the key 25-54 demographic. The network as a whole has faced a 47% drop in total-day viewers, according to The New York Post.
