Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) is trying to place the responsibility on fellow Republicans to tamp down on erstwhile President Donald Trump as he bangs out at the Justice Department and the FBI over the raid of his Mar-a-Lago sanctuary. Cheney made this statement in response to Trump’s comments that he was “very angry” about the attack.
After hearing Trump say the night before at a rally near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, that the Department of Justice and the FBI have become “vicious monsters” under the influence of “radical” politicians and the media outlets, Cheney, who has been a significant critic of the former president, took to Twitter on Sunday to respond to Trump’s comments.
Cheney said in a tweet that there is only one group of Americans who have a chance to lessen the threat posed by Trump’s rhetoric, and that group is Republicans. “Trump is attacking law enforcement and yet again using language he knows will provoke violence,” Cheney said. “If my fellow Republicans fail to step up to stop this, they will share the blame for all that follows.“

Last month, the Republican primary election for Wyoming’s at-large House seat was won by Harriet Hageman, who had Trump’s support. Cheney was defeated by Hageman. During her concession statement, which took a swipe at Trump’s rhetoric and his position in the riot on January 6 at the Capitol, Cheney made a passing reference to the fact that Abraham Lincoln lost races prior to becoming president. She did so in order to make the point that she may run for president in the future.
Her participation in the House Committee on January 6 and her vote to impeach President Trump over the disturbance in the Capitol have contributed to a growing breach between Cheney and other leaders of the Republican Party. After the Wyoming Republican Party voted to disavow her the previous year, Cheney’s spokesman, Jeremy Adler, issued a statement in which he said it is “laughable to suggest Liz is anything but a committed conservative Republican.” Cheney was also removed from her position as the No. 3 Republican leader in the House of Representatives by fellow Republicans.
According to the warrant to search that was unsealed following the raid that the FBI conducted at President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida a month ago, the president is under investigation for potential violations of the Espionage Act as well as obstructing justice regarding his handling of records after he left office. He has leveled sweeping accusations of misconduct while simultaneously criticizing the operations of the FBI and the Justice Department.

Cheney tweeted, “Yet more indefensible conduct by Donald Trump revealed this morning,” after the Department of Justice published a photograph of classified material obtained at the venue as part of a legal back-and-forth over Trump’s special master proposal.
