LPGA Bans Biological Men, Transgender Golfer Explodes In Anger: ‘Thanks For Nothing’
The Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) announced a significant revision to its gender eligibility criteria, effectively barring transgender women who have undergone male puberty from participating in its elite competitions. The policy change is set to take effect in the 2025 season.
The LPGA’s updated gender eligibility policy was shaped by input from a multidisciplinary group of experts, including leaders in medicine, sports science, physiology, golf performance, and gender policy law. The team reviewed extensive research and consulted with various stakeholders to craft a policy aimed at preserving the fairness and competitive integrity of women’s professional and elite amateur golf tournaments.
The new policy stipulates that athletes assigned female at birth are eligible to compete in top-tier events, including the LPGA Tour, Epson Tour, Ladies European Tour, and other elite competitions. However, players assigned male at birth who have undergone male puberty are ineligible for these tournaments. The decision stems from findings that male puberty results in physical advantages that can impact performance in golf, offering a competitive edge not available to those who did not experience male puberty.
To balance inclusivity with the professional standards of competition, the LPGA will apply different criteria for its recreational programs and non-elite events.

LPGA Commissioner Mollie Marcoux Samaan said in a statement, “Our policy is reflective of an extensive, science-based and inclusive approach. The policy represents our continued commitment to ensuring that all feel welcome within our organization, while preserving the fairness and competitive equity of our elite competitions.”
The policy shift has directly impacted golfers like Hailey Davidson, a transgender athlete who began his transition in his early 20s. Davidson, who has been striving to earn an LPGA Tour card, expressed profound disappointment with the new regulations.

“Can’t say I didn’t see this coming. Banned from the Epson and LPGA,” Davidson wrote on Instagram. “All the silence and people wanting to stay ‘neutral’ thanks for absolutely nothing. This happened because of all your silence.” Davidson continued, “Somehow people are surprised the suicide rate for transgender people is around 50%. Situations just like this are part of the reason.”
“What a great birthday present for 2024. Having the greatest achievement I’ve earned in my life taken from me.” Davidson later added, “Gets outdriven by every player in every group I played in at stage 2 of Q school yet I’m somehow the one with an advantage and gets banned.”
“For the record, I was not involved nor asked to be involved on any of the ‘studies’ that any golf organization has just used to ban me, the only active golfer who is actually effected by these policy changes,” Davidson said regarding the LPGA’s statement.
Davidson narrowly missed qualifying for the US Women’s Open by just one shot this year and did not make it through LPGA Q-school. Formerly competing in male golf tournaments until 2015, Davidson started hormone therapy treatments and completed gender reassignment surgery in 2021.
The LPGA’s decision aligns with similar policies adopted by other sports organizations. For instance, World Athletics and the International Swimming Federation have implemented rules restricting the participation of transgender athletes who have experienced male puberty in women’s events.
