The incident comes less than a week after a sleeping woman was set on fire while riding a city subway line in Brooklyn. Disturbing footage of the incident showed the woman completely engulfed in flames while onlookers opted not to intervene. She did not survive.
On Friday, a Guatemalan national was indicted and accused of intentionally setting the woman on fire. Prosecutors have alleged that  Sebastian Zapeta fanned the flames with a shirt before watching the woman burn from a platform bench.
Emergency responders arrived at the scene to find the woman’s body severely burned. She was pronounced dead on the scene. Efforts to identify her are ongoing, and authorities have turned to advanced DNA analysis to confirm her identity as reported by The Associated Press. Investigators believe she may have been homeless.
Zapeta had previously been deported from the United States in 2018 but reentered the country illegally.
