Mariah Carey’s Family Announces Devastating News
In a tragic turn of events over the weekend, the world of pop music was struck by sorrow.
Reports have confirmed that Mariah Carey, celebrated for her Grammy-winning talent, faced the devastating loss of both her mother, Patricia, and her sister, Alison. The cause of their deaths has not yet been disclosed.
“My heart is broken that I’ve lost my mother this past weekend. Sadly, in a tragic turn of events, my sister lost her life on the same day,” the Grammy-winning singer said to PEOPLE. “I feel blessed that I was able to spend the last week with my mom before she passed. I appreciate everyone’s love and support and respect for my privacy during this impossible time.”
Details surrounding the circumstances of their deaths remain unclear. Patricia Carey, a Juilliard-trained opera singer and vocal coach, had previously been married to Alfred Roy Carey. The couple had three children: Alison, Mariah, and their son Morgan. Mariah Carey, who inherited her vocal prowess from her mother, had a complex relationship with Patricia throughout her life.

“Like many aspects of my life, my journey with my mother has been full of contradictions and competing realities. It’s never been only black-and-white — it’s been a whole rainbow of emotions,” Carrey, 55, wrote in her memoir. “Our relationship is a prickly rope of pride, pain, shame, gratitude, jealousy, admiration and disappointment. A complicated love tethers my heart to my mother’s,” the singer wrote in 2020.
“And to Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could,” she wrote. “I will love you the best I can, always.” Despite their complex relationship, Carey honored her mother by dedicating her memoir to her. Their connection shone publicly in 2010 when they performed a duet of “O Come All Ye Faithful” during ABC’s special, Mariah Carey: Merry Christmas to You.
Over her three-decade career, Carey has consistently reinvented her sound, seamlessly moving from soulful ballads to R&B and pop anthems, and even hip-hop collaborations. Albums like “Music Box” and “Daydream” solidified her status as a pop superstar in the 1990s, with tracks such as “Hero” and “Always Be My Baby” becoming anthems of their era. Her 1994 holiday release, “Merry Christmas,” delivered the perennial favorite “All I Want for Christmas Is You,” which has since become a global holiday classic, charting annually.
Carey, a defining voice of modern pop music, has captivated audiences worldwide with her five-octave vocal range and signature melismatic singing style. Carey’s rise to stardom was as meteoric as it was record-breaking. Her 1990 self-titled debut album rocketed to the top of the charts, propelled by hits like “Vision of Love,” which not only showcased her incredible vocal talents but also her ability to blend genres.
Carey’s influence extends beyond music; she’s also an acclaimed songwriter and producer, having co-written most of her hits. Her talent and persistence have earned her numerous accolades, including five Grammy Awards and multiple Billboard and World Music Awards. Mariah’s impact on the music industry is undeniable, with over 200 million records sold worldwide, making her one of the best-selling music artists of all time.
