Rep. MTG of Gerogia is back on committee assignments now that Republicans have retaken the House and the Rep. Gaetz-led revolt has put some steel in McCarthy’s spine. Democrats removed MTG from her committee assignments in February of 2021 because they found a few social media posts of hers offensive, as CBS reported at the time, saying:
The House voted Thursday to strip controversial Republican Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene of her committee assignments. All Democrats and 11 Republicans voted for the measure, despite Republican leader Kevin McCarthy’s opposition to it.
In social media posts and videos made before she was elected to Congress, Greene, a freshman from Georgia, embraced a slew of far-right conspiracy theories, including questioning whether deadly school shootings had been staged and whether a plane really hit the Pentagon on 9/11. A supporter of the fantastical QAnon conspiracy theory, she also shared videos with anti-Semitic and anti-Muslim sentiment, and expressed support for violence against Democratic leaders in Congress.
Well, now the hand-wringing and pearl-clutching over Facebook posts is over and MTG, one of the standouts in the GOP Congressional Caucus, is back on committees and fighting for MAGA policies while on them. Specifically, MTG will now be on the Oversight Committee and the Homeland Security Committee.
Adding some details on what Greene will be doing on those committees, the Washington Examiner reported that:
The Homeland Security panel works on legislation regarding national security, which includes the border and immigration, and conducts oversight of the Department of Homeland Security. The House Committee on Oversight and Accountability will be responsible for one of the GOP’s investigations into classified documents found in President Joe Biden’s former office. Greene had previously mentioned she wanted to join the Oversight panel.
Rep. MTG wasn’t the only controversial Republican representative to get committee seats back. Rep. Paul Gosar, who was kicked off his committee seats after he posted a video that the Democrats found offensive. The video was a cartoon of him attacking AOC and Biden, and was meant to be humorous…predictably the Democrats lost it and used it to try to humiliate him and purge him from Congressional committees, as The Hill reported at the time, saying:
The House voted almost entirely along party lines on Wednesday to censure Rep. Paul Gosar (R-Ariz.) and take away his committee seats for posting an anime video depicting him violently attacking Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and President Biden.
Only two Republicans, Reps. Liz Cheney (Wyo.) and Adam Kinzinger (Ill.), joined all Democrats as the House voted 223-207, with Rep. David Joyce (R-Ohio) voting “present,” to punish Gosar.
In an extraordinary scene, Gosar was forced to stand in the center of the House floor as Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) read aloud the resolution that made him just the 24th lawmaker in the chamber’s more than 200-year history to be censured.
Gosar will also be removed from the House Oversight and Reform Committee, where he has served with Ocasio-Cortez, as well as the House Natural Resources Committee.
In any case, Rep. Gosar both got a committee on the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, which will be digging into Biden and his potential crimes, and he got a seat on the House Committee on Natural Resources, the committee he was previously on.
