Massie Calls On Speaker Johnson To Rescind Steve Bannon’s Subpoena, Repudiate Jan 6 Committee

U.S. Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY) is calling on House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) to rescind the January 6 committee’s subpoena to former White House advisor Steve Bannon and repudiate the committee’s work.

In May, a D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the criminal conviction of Steve Bannon, upholding the 2022 verdict that found the former Trump strategist guilty of contempt of Congress. Bannon is now set to report to prison by July 1 after Judge Carl Nichols, appointed by former President Donald Trump, revoked his bail and ruled that the previous reasons for delaying his sentence are no longer valid on Thursday.

In an X post, Massie called on Speaker Johnson to take action. “Why don’t we rescind the Congressional subpoena for Steve Bannon and officially repudiate the J6 committee by a vote of Congress?” Massie wrote while tagging the speaker.

Under advice from his lawyer, Bannon did not comply with a subpoena from Nancy Pelosi’s January 6 committee and was ultimately found in contempt of Congress.

The committee defied decades of congressional precedent when then House Speaker Pelosi (D-CA) refused to allow then House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to appoint Republican members. Congressional committees, with the exception of the January 6 committee, always allow the opposition party to select its own members.

Instead of following procedure, Pelosi appointed Reps. Liz Cheney and Adam Kinzinger, both of whom are no longer in Congress and are supporting President Biden’s re-election bid. Cheney was obliterated in a primary contest while Kinzinger resigned rather than face a similar fate.

The committee then hired a Hollywood producer to touch up cherrypicked footage used by the committee to advance the false “insurrection” narrative during primetime hearings. The committee heard unverified testimony from a number of anti-Trump partisans, including former Trump aide Cassidy Hutchinson, who told a bizarre story about Trump grabbing the steering wheel from Secret Service agents when the January 6 protests were unfolding. Her claims have been disputed by Secret Service personnel and House Republicans are investigating her for perjury.

Nine House Republicans voted in favor of holding Bannon in contempt of Congress. All but two of them — Reps. Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA) and Nancy Mace (R-SC) — have been voted out or retired.
