Mayor Pete’s 2028 Campaign Doomed By Brutal New Poll

Former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, who is widely seen as a Democratic Party presidential contender, is suffering from a stunning lack of support among a key voting block that could doom his campaign before it ever truly gets off the ground.

According to a new poll released Friday from Emerson College, Buttigieg is the most preferable option for Democratic Primary voters ahead of the next presidential election. While projecting the field is notoriously hard to do this far out from a race, the former South Bend mayor has received significant support in a number of prior surveys as well.

According to the Emerson College poll, 16 percent of Democratic Primary voters indicated that they plan to support Buttigieg, giving him the strongest support among any candidates listed. This includes former Vice President Kamala Harris, who was favored by 13 percent of respondents.

California Governor Gavin Newsom trailed close behind at 12 percent, followed by Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, both of whom polled at seven percent each.

The survey provided a notable snag for Buttigieg’s presidential ambitions, however, as his polling among black respondents stood at an astonishing zero percent. Poor support among black voters could doom the campaign early, as the Democratic Party presidential primary now begins with South Carolina.

In addition to making up an indispensable portion of the Democratic Party coalition, black voters make up a sizable portion of the Democratic primary voting block in the Palmetto State.

Buttigieg previously struggled to gain support among black voters when he launched his initial presidential bid in 2020. During the campaign cycle, he was accused of not sufficiently listening to black voters issues and was even accused of racism for demoting South Bend’s first black police chief.

The candidate who polled best among Black voters is Kamala Harris, with 30.1 percent of respondents expressing their support for her, according to the poll. Buttigieg polled the best among white voters (22 percent) and college graduates (20 percent), while he also polled the most among those with additional higher education credentials.

Friday’s poll does not mark the first time Buttigieg has led the Democratic Party field in recent weeks. A poll released by Atlas Intel on May 30 also found Buttigieg as the top candidate among Democratic primary voters.
