BREAKING: U.S. Makes First Moon Landing In More Than 50 Years
The U.S. has landed on the moon for the first time in more than 50 years with the successful deployment of the unmanned spacecraft Odysseus, which safely landed on the moon Thursday
On February 15, Odysseus was launched into orbit on “a trajectory toward the moon” with the SpaceX Rocket 9, according to a report from the New York Times.
The spacecraft’s journey to the moon was not an easy one, particularly in the hours leading up to its approach to the moon. Ahead of the projected arrival time, communications glitches led to fears that Odysseus had crashed.
This was not the case, however, as Intuitive Machines Chief Technology Tim Crain confirmed that the probe was “definitely on the moon and operating,” the New York Times reported.
Concerns remain over whether the spacecraft will be able to complete its objectives, which includes capturing updates images of the lunar surface.
Thursday’s landing was the first time a U.S. spacecraft has landed on the moon since 1972, when the crewed Apollo 17 craft touched down. The project was the result of collaboration among multiple private and government organizations, including NASA, SpaceX and Intuitive Machines.
This is a developing story.
