More Bad News for Brittney: America-Bashing Athlete Loses Appeal, Will Have to Serve Sentence in Russia

Brittney Griner is the WNBA player who, before she became (in)famous for attempting to bring hash oil for her vape into the Russian Federation, was (in)famous (or at least as famous as an athlete in the generally unwatched WNBA can be) for being one of those WNBA players that protested America following George Floyd’s death. To do so, she refused to appear on court for the National Anthem.

Well, Brittney isn’t going to be hearing the American National Anthem anytime soon: she just lost her appeal in a Russian court, meaning that she’s going to have to serve her nine years in a Russian jail and pay the million rubles fine.

Yet worse for Brittney the America-basher, she’s not going to just be rotting in some cell: she’s headed to a Russian penal colony.

Conservative Twitter personality and author Nick Adams announced as much in a Twitter post, saying:

Brittney Griner is being transferred to a Russian penal colony, where she will spend the next 9 years after losing her appeal.

Thankful Brittney landed in a place where she won’t have to hear our terrible and oppressive National Anthem again for the foreseeable future. 🙏

YahooNews reported on the Griner situation as well, albeit with a good bit less glee at the America-bashing athlete’s fate, saying:

The jailed American basketball star exhausted the last of her legal options on Tuesday when her last-gasp appeal predictably went nowhere.

A Moscow regional court upheld Griner’s August conviction on charges of drug possession and drug smuggling with criminal intent. The court rejected arguments from Griner’s defense attorneys that her nine-year prison sentence was excessive and unjustified under Russian law.

YahooNews added that her attorneys are trying to at least have her kept at one of the penal colonies near Moscow rather than one of the ones far away in Siberia, saying:

Since the appeals court again rejected those arguments and endorsed the lower court’s initial verdict, Griner soon may have to endure somewhere worse than the Novoye Grishino pre-trial detention center where she has been held the past eight months. Her sentence calls for her to be transferred to a penal colony, where conditions can be more brutal and inmates are required to perform labor during their sentence.

There are hundreds of penal colonies in Russia, many of them scattered across Siberia. Griner’s attorneys are expected to ask for her to be sent somewhere close to Moscow so that they can maintain contact with her, but the final decision will not be theirs.

Before the appeal, Griner’s attorney had said “Brittney does not expect any miracles to happen, but hopes that the appeal court will hear the arguments of the defense and reduce the number of years.”

Well, neither did a miracle happen nor was the appellate court merciful. So Griner will have to reap what she has sown and spend her time working off her crime in a Russian penal colony…maybe after she’s labored away, whether in Siberia or somewhere else, for nine years, America and its police officers will seem less bad than when she was a pampered athlete…
