GOP Rep. Turns On MTG, Incurs Her Wrath: ‘What’s The Point?’
It was a busy day of back-and-forth between Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and a bipartisan chorus of haters who piled on her over a slew of past and present statements. But it was the intraparty criticism of a fellow GOP lawmaker that prompted particular wrath from the MAGA member.
Mike Lawler (R-NY), a political consultant-turned politician who is believed to be weighing a decision about whether to run for governor of New York in 2026, ridiculed Greene as the “Jewish Space Laser lady” after she decried his comments about the state and local tax (SALT) deductions in President Donald Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill currently working its way through U.S. House negotiations.
After Lawler expressed his doubts about supporting the bill, Greene accused her northern colleague of threatening to tank Trump’s signature economic legislation unless the tax cut is raised beyond the threefold increase already contained in the latest draft.
“Mike Lawler usually isn’t the guy in the conference with the best ideas, after all we lost a Republican held seat to a Democrat the last time Republicans voted for one of his ‘great’ strategy,” she wrote on X.
“Now Mike Lawler is a NO on Trump’s big beautiful bill because he won’t accept a SALT cap increase from $10K to $30K per year.
“What’s the point in Republicans fighting to protect and keep re-electing “Republicans” if they constantly undermine the agenda America voted for???”
She added: “What’s the point in Republicans fighting to protect and keep re-electing ‘Republicans’ if they constantly undermine the agenda America voted for???”
Her quip prompted Lawler to fire back with one of his own.
“Shockingly, the ‘Jewish Space Laser’ lady once again doesn’t have a clue what she is talking about,” Lawler said in an X post seen by the NY Post.
“By the way, the reason you enjoy a gavel is because Republicans like me have won our seats. Good luck being in the majority if we don’t.”
Later in the day, and while feuding with “Squad” Democrat Ilhan Omar (D-MN) over the possible pardon of Derek Chauvin, MTG took another swipe at her more moderate GOP colleague.
“Busy day fighting Democrats. First Mike Lawler who is trying to destroy Trump’s agenda and now illegal alien Ilhan Omar of Somalia,” she wrote.
U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is trying to thread a needle with his ideologically diverse GOP majority and can afford to lose only a handful of votes in the face of unanimous Democratic opposition. In addition to complaints by the likes of Lawler, Johnson is also contending with consternation by ultra-conservative Freedom Caucus members who say that cuts to government spending don’t go far enough to pay for the tax deductions.
President Trump has let the negotiations run their course, instead focusing his public remarks on his Middle East trip while highlighting trade deals accomplished since last week’s announcement that the U.S. had reached a 90-day pause in tariffs with China.
A draft of the legislation released this week teases plenty of wish-list items for Republicans eager to see popular tax deductions put in place for the remainder of Trump’s term. Among them would be “MAGA accounts” filled with $1,000 and given to new parents of children born during his time in office.
