MUST-SEE: Bodycam Footage Shows Top Democrat Lawmaker’s Arrest
Newly released bodycam footage gives an up-close look at a Democratic state lawmaker who broke and entered a private home last month.
Minnesota Democrat Senator Nicole Mitchell faces up to 20 years in prison on charges of burglary stemming from a break-in that police officers responded to at her stepmother’s home on April 22, 2024.
Michelle has claimed that her stepmother suffers from Alzheimer’s and that she was simply conducting a wellness check after not hearing from her for weeks.
The case is now in court, where a jury watched as an officer walked through the house, gun drawn, before encountering Mitchell and ordering her to lie on the ground.
“I was just trying to get a few of my dad’s things because he wouldn’t talk to me anymore,” the Democratic lawmaker can be heard telling officers in the minute-long clip.
As she’s cuffed and led to the cruiser, Mitchell shouts desperately, “No one stole anything here!”

Opening statements in Tuesday’s case hinged on testimony from Carol Mitchell, the stepmother of the accused lawmaker, who demonstrated at times a faulty recollection of the events that night.
“I’m bad at that,” Carol Mitchell replied when asked by Becker County Attorney Brian McDonald what year she met Mitchell’s father, Roderick.
Mitchell’s father died in 2023, a year that Carol Mitchell recalled after the court took a recess. Other recollections were incorrect, including the location in the house where police located the lawmaker, the MN Reformer reported.
Carol Mitchell allegedly told police at the scene that she believed her stepdaughter “wants to take me out.” After Sen. Mitchell identified herself, her stepmother allegedly replied, “You had your aunts do it,” and told police, “She’s trying to get my money.”
Throughout the bodycam footage of the arrest, Sen. Mitchell continued to tell police that her stepmother suffered from Alzheimer’s and defended her decision to break into the property. She offered Becker County Deputy Sheriff Ethan Wothe text messages she claimed showed Carol Mitchell struggled with delusions.
“It’s not a reason to break into anybody’s house,” the officer responded.
“I don’t know if it means anything but she’s a state senator,” Wothe told another officer on the scene.
Carol Mitchell told officers at the time she believed her stepdaughter broke in to search for a “tin box” containing legal documents related to her father.
Sen. Mitchell’s fate now falls on 14 jurors — 10 men and four women — in a county that President Donald Trump won by 33 points last year. In addition to facing a maximum of 20 years in prison, Mitchell may be sentenced to a maximum of three years if found to be in possession of burglary tools, such as a crowbar found at the scene.
