MUST SEE: ‘Doomsday Plane’ Spotted Again Flying Over Blue State

A U.S. Navy aircraft commonly referred to as the “Doomsday Plane” was spotted flying repeated circles over California’s Central Valley this week, drawing attention from residents who noticed the large jet making multiple low passes near a major airport.

Witnesses reported seeing the aircraft circling the area around Fresno Yosemite International Airport for nearly two hours. Some said the plane appeared to be conducting several approach attempts, sparking curiosity online after photos and flight tracking data began circulating on social media.

Airport officials later confirmed that the aircraft was conducting training maneuvers that included simulated landings and approach practice.

The plane believed to be involved in the flight is the Boeing E-6B Mercury, a specialized U.S. Navy command-and-control aircraft that plays a key role in the country’s nuclear command network. The aircraft is operated by the Navy’s Strategic Communications Wing and is designed to maintain communication with U.S. nuclear forces during a national emergency.

Because of its mission, the aircraft has earned the nickname “Doomsday Plane.”

The E-6B Mercury is a heavily modified Boeing 707 that performs what the military calls the TACAMO mission, short for “Take Charge and Move Out.” The aircraft serves as an airborne communications relay capable of transmitting launch orders and strategic messages to U.S. ballistic missile submarines, bombers and other nuclear forces even if ground communication systems were disrupted.

One of the plane’s most distinctive features is its ability to deploy a long trailing antenna used to communicate with submarines deep underwater. The aircraft can also operate as an airborne command post capable of coordinating military forces during a crisis.

While sightings of the aircraft sometimes trigger alarm online, military analysts say the flights are often routine. Strategic communications aircraft regularly conduct training flights across the United States to maintain readiness.

These exercises can include navigation drills, communications testing and practice approaches at civilian airports. In this case, officials indicated the aircraft was simply performing training approaches and simulated landings at the Fresno airport.

Even so, the sighting drew widespread attention given the aircraft’s unusual mission and the heightened geopolitical tensions currently involving the United States and Iran. The Navy operates a small fleet of the aircraft, and at least one is typically airborne or ready for rapid deployment at any given time.

Because of the aircraft’s distinctive appearance and rare visibility over populated areas, sightings of the plane tend to generate speculation online whenever it appears on flight trackers or is observed circling over cities. Officials have not indicated that the latest flight over California was connected to any specific military operation or threat.

Instead, authorities say the aircraft’s presence over the Central Valley appears to have been part of routine training meant to ensure crews remain prepared for the highly specialized mission the aircraft performs.

Still, seeing one of the military’s most secretive and strategically important aircraft circling above a major California city was enough to capture the attention of residents across the region.
