In an inspiring Alamo Bowl victory, the No. 14 Arizona Wildcats triumphed over No. 12 Oklahoma, 38-24, much thanks to the outstanding performance of defensive star Martell Irby.

Irby had a standout performance of seven tackles, an interception, and a forced fumble, all while the Wildcats to a big victory. His journey, however, is nothing short of miraculous. Just a few years ago, Irby found himself living out of a Kia and working at a gym for basic amenities like a shower.

Moving to Tucson without a scholarship or a guaranteed spot on the team, he bet on himself and emerged as a key player for Arizona.

In a heartfelt post-game interview, Irby expressed his gratitude, saying, “Glory be to God. I can’t thank Arizona enough. I can’t thank my brothers enough.”

Irby dedicated his initial four seasons in college to playing with the UCLA Bruins. Last year, he experienced a car accident, and the injuries he sustained from the incident were significant factors in his choice to retire from the sport.

Approximately one year following the severe car accident, Irby joined the Arizona football team as a walk-on. He was later awarded a scholarship by UA coach Jedd Fisch prior to the Wildcats’ season-opening win.

Reflecting on his past, Irby also acknowledged the importance of withdrawing from familiar support systems to discover his path. He found success and belonging in the camaraderie and collective effort of the Arizona Wildcats.

“We just love each other,” Irby said, attributing their success to the strong bonds formed off the field.
