NBA Commissioner Praises Trump’s Historic NBA Finals Appearance
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver is drawing attention after publicly welcoming President Donald Trump to Madison Square Garden ahead of Game 3 of the NBA Finals, a move that many viewed as a notable departure from the league’s often tense relationship with the president during his first term in office.
Speaking before tipoff, Silver said he was “thrilled” that Trump would be attending the game and described the president’s appearance as a historic moment for the league. The commissioner noted that Trump has long been connected to New York basketball and has been a familiar presence at NBA events for decades.
“Trump, you know, I’ve been with the league for a long time,” Silver said. “I ran NBA Entertainment years ago. He did an ‘I Love This Game’ spot with us. He was a fixture at Madison Square Garden. He had courtside seats. He was here all the time. He was at the draft. So he’s a genuine Knicks fan.”
Silver acknowledged that Trump’s attendance required heightened security measures that created additional challenges for fans entering the arena, but he argued that the significance of the moment outweighed the inconvenience.
“Looking around this arena, it’s packed,” Silver said. “People came early. They got through whatever extra security, which is necessary.”

“As I said, I think we should be using sports to create more of a sense of community with people, not less,” Silver added.
Trump’s appearance at Madison Square Garden generated enormous interest both inside and outside the arena. The president attended the game alongside his granddaughter, Kai Trump, and watched from a suite hosted by Knicks owner James Dolan. Members of the administration and several prominent guests were also present.
Security around the venue was significantly increased due to the president’s visit, leading to longer lines and additional screening procedures for fans entering the arena. Despite the extra precautions, the building was packed as New York hosted one of the biggest basketball games in recent memory.
When Trump appeared on the jumbotron during the game, the crowd delivered a mixed reaction. Some fans erupted into chants of “USA! USA!” while others responded with boos. Multiple reports from inside the arena described cheers and boos taking place simultaneously, reflecting the political diversity of both New York City and the NBA fan base.
While the crowd reaction became a major talking point online, many conservatives focused instead on Silver’s comments before the game.

For years, the NBA has often been viewed as one of the most politically progressive major sports leagues in America. During Trump’s first presidency, numerous controversies emerged involving players, coaches and team executives speaking out on political issues. As a result, some expected league leadership to maintain a cautious distance from the president’s attendance.
Instead, Silver chose to frame the visit as a positive development for the league and a milestone moment in NBA history. According to the commissioner, Trump’s appearance marked the first time a sitting president had attended an NBA Finals game.
That distinction gave the event additional significance beyond politics, Silver suggested. Rather than focusing on ideological disagreements, he highlighted the president’s longtime connection to the sport and the opportunity for basketball to bring Americans together.
