Netflix star José de la Torre, best known for his role in the hit series “Toy Boy,” has died at 37 years old.

The Spanish heartthrob suffered a brief battle with a “serious illness” before passing away, according to the New York Post. His funeral took place on December 6th in Spain’s Córdoba Province at the Parish of San Francisco Solano and was first noted in the local paper for his hometown of Montilla. The news comes six months after de la Torre told his social media followers that he was battling a “serious illness” but didn’t elaborate. Later in June, he stepped away from the cameras to begin undergoing more rigorous treatment, he explained at the time.

Some of Spain’s most illustrious celebrities offered their condolences as news got out. “I can’t believe you’re gone so soon. I’m devastated by your departure. I’m sending kisses to all of your family and friends,” Spanish singer Pablo Alborán wrote via Instagram. “We’ll never forget you Jose. Wherever you are, I’m sure you’re wearing a Hawaiian shirt, a killer moustache, and those sunglasses like the ones we wore that day.” Actress Luisa Martín said, “It breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear your voice again, but I’ll keep talking to you. Love you endlessly, José.” Spanish actress and singer Lolita Flores, whom The Mirror reported spoke at his funeral, stated “It breaks my heart to think I’ll never hear your voice again, but I’ll keep talking to you. Love you endlessly, José.”

In his final Instagram post on June 3rd, a shirtless de la Torre looks healthy and fit, giving a backwards peace sign to the camera and flashing a boyish grin. “The happiness of arriving in the Canary Islands, seeing your friends, grab a mojito and start singing until your voice breaks,” de la Torre captioned the series of party pictures. “That’s been Desalia 2024.” He added, “And that’s thanks to the team behind @ronbarcelospain who goes above and beyond every year.”

“Toy Boy” ran for two seasons and elevated de la Torre to the top of the pile of up-and-comers who owe their success to chances taken on them by Netflix. In the show, de la Torre plays a male stripper fingered for murder who sets out to prove his innocence. The Spanish-language series received positive reviews from its audience, according to Rotten Tomatoes, before ending in 2021. Prior to “Toy Boy,” de la Torre had just begun his acting career in 2017, taking smaller parts in the police drama “Serve and Protect” and “Vis a Vis: El Oasis” and “Amar es para siempre,” both released in 2020.
