NEW: 4,000 U.S. Troops Specialized In Amphibious Operations Will Deploy To Middle East
In a significant escalation of U.S. military presence in the Middle East, the Pentagon has ordered the deployment of an Amphibious Ready Group (ARG) and attached Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), totaling roughly 4,000 service members. The latest deployment will include approximately 2,500 Marines and units specializing in amphibious operations, according to a report from Newsmax.
The report, which citied multiple U.S. officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity, elements of the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Japan, along with the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli, were initially redirected toward the region. This was done as part of a broader reinforcement, with the Boxer Amphibious Ready Group and 11th MEU from the West Coast accelerating their deployment ahead of schedule to join operations.
The Boxer ARG includes the USS Boxer, USS Portland, and USS Comstock, equipped with F-35 fighter jets, missiles, amphibious vehicles, MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotors, and helicopters. The USS Tripoli will link up with these forces, potentially expanding to six amphibious ships and adding about 8,000 total service members — including between 4,000 and 5,000 Marines — to the region.
War Secretary Pete Hegseth approved the request from U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), according to a report from the Associated Press.
Marine Expeditionary Units are explicitly designed for rapid-response amphibious operations. Marine Expeditionary Units are not only trained and equipped to conduct amphibious landings but they also specialize in bolstering security at embassies, evacuating civilians, and disaster relief.
These forces include an infantry battalion, aviation elements, and logistics support capable of launching landing craft, aircraft, and small boats for maritime security missions, raids, evacuations, or limited combat operations without requiring a full-scale ground invasion. Military.com noted that such a deployment could allow the Pentagon to increase operations against Iran without amassing the forces necessary for a large scale ground invasion.
The deployment does not signal imminent large-scale ground operations in Iran but provides commanders flexible options near the Strait of Hormuz, the outlet speculated.

Since the conflict erupted on February 28, additional ground troop deployments have been limited and expeditionary in nature. President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that he does not intend on using ground troops in the conflict, though he has also refused to rule out the possibility.
News of the latest deployment comes just a day after Israeli forces launched strikes targeting Iran’s largest natural gas field, which led to retaliatory strikes on energy infrastructure across the gulf states. President Donald Trump has urged restraint on targeting energy infrastructure, though he has not ruled out additional strikes if U.S. and allied energy facilities are targeted.
