NEW: AOC Under Fire For Telling Military To Refuse Orders

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez blasted President Donald Trump on Tuesday after he threatened devastating military action against Iran, urging U.S. service members to reject any unlawful commands tied to the president’s ultimatum.

“The President’s mental faculties are collapsing and cannot be trusted,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote in response to Trump’s Truth Social post. “To every individual in the President’s chain of command: You have a duty to refuse illegal orders. That includes carrying out this threat.”

The New York Democrat was reacting after Trump warned Iran that its “civilization” could be wiped out if Tehran refuses to meet U.S. demands, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz. The president reportedly set an 8 p.m. Eastern deadline, and the threat worked; Iran agreed to the tentative ceasefire shortly after.

Ocasio-Cortez’s comments came as some Democrats escalated calls for Trump’s removal from office, with several members of the party’s progressive wing floating impeachment and even renewed discussion of invoking the 25th Amendment. Both options face steep odds in the Republican-controlled House.

The congresswoman joined fellow Democrats Tuesday in backing efforts to remove Trump from power, though House Democratic leadership stopped short of endorsing that position.

Instead, top House Democrats called on Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., to reconvene lawmakers immediately and hold a vote on a war powers resolution aimed at blocking further military action by Trump. The House is currently in recess until the week of April 13.

“It’s time for House Republicans to put patriotic duty over party loyalty and join Democrats in stopping this madness,” Democratic leaders led by House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said in a statement.

The White House quickly blasted Democrats over the rhetoric.

“This is pathetic. Democrats have been talking about impeaching President Trump since before he was even sworn into office,” White House spokesman Davis Ingle said. “The Democrats in Congress are deranged, weak, and ineffective, which is why their approval ratings are at historic lows.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s remarks also revived comparisons to a separate controversy from last year, when the Department of Justice launched an investigation into six Democratic lawmakers who appeared in a 2025 video urging military and intelligence personnel to reject “illegal” government orders.

Those lawmakers included Sens. Elissa Slotkin, D-Mich., and Mark Kelly, D-Ariz., along with Reps. Jason Crow, D-Colo., Maggie Goodlander, D-N.H., Chrissy Houlahan, D-Pa., and Chris DeLuzio, D-Pa.

A Washington, D.C., grand jury declined to indict the lawmakers in February, dealing a setback to U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro.

Kelly separately warned Trump this week against targeting Iranian civilian sites.

“Illegal orders to make civilians suffer would be a black mark on our military and our country,” the Arizona Democrat wrote on social media.
