New Bomb Threat Near Gracie Mansion Rocks NYC Hours After ISIS-Inspired Attempt
A New York City park next to Gracie Mansion was evacuated Tuesday after police activity sparked bomb concerns just days after authorities say two teens, inspired by ISIS propaganda, tried to detonate homemade explosives near Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s residence.
Carl Schurz Park, which sits beside the mayor’s official home on Manhattan’s Upper East Side, was cleared out as NYPD officers moved people away from the area. Social media posts showed residents and passersby being told to leave with little explanation as police worked the scene.
“NYPD closing and evacuating Carl Schurz park, it’s immediately adjacent to Gracie Mansion,” NewsNation reporter Marcus Espinoza posted on X. “I was sitting on a bench facing the water after my shift when NYPD officer asked us all to leave. When I asked him ‘is everything okay?’ He said ‘we’re trying to figure that out’.”
Shortly afterward, the NYPD posted a public advisory warning people to avoid the area.
“Due to ongoing police activity, please avoid the area of Carl Schurz Park (East End Avenue from East 90th Street to East 84th Street), as well as East 85th and 86th Street between East End Avenue and York Avenue,” the NYPD said in a now-deleted post.
Police did not immediately release details about what triggered the evacuation. A helicopter was seen overhead as the area remained restricted.
The heightened alert came on the heels of an explosive scare near the mansion over the weekend. Authorities have said two U.S. nationals were arrested after a homemade bomb was thrown near a protest close to Gracie Mansion and failed to detonate.
Two men, identified as 18-year-old Emir Balat and 19-year-old Ibrahim Kayumi, have been charged with terror offenses. Police said the suspects were inspired by the Islamic State group and had watched ISIS propaganda videos.

“We were fortunate that the devices used this weekend did not cause the kind of harm that they were certainly capable of causing,” NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said Monday. “But luck is never a strategy. Devices like these have the potential to cause devastating harm.”
Tisch said investigators believe “The defendants were inspired by ISIS to carry out their attack,” and she emphasized the threat posed by the terror group.
“There should be no confusion about what ISIS constitutes. It is a designated foreign terrorist organization responsible for deadly terrorist attacks across the globe, and has taken credit for mass casualty attacks in Europe, the Middle East, and right here in the United States,” she said.

The weekend incident unfolded during a protest in the city that officials said drew clashes between demonstrators and counter-protesters. Mamdani condemned the violence and the alleged attempt to use explosives.
“What followed was even more disturbing. Violence at a protest is never acceptable. The attempt to use an explosive device and hurt others is not only criminal, but it is reprehensible and the antithesis of who we are.”

The FBI said Tuesday it searched a storage unit believed to be connected to the weekend incident and found explosive residue.
“Yesterday’s search of the storage unit believed to be connected the Gracie Mansion incident revealed explosive residue. FBI Special Agent Bomb Technicians and the local bomb squads conducted a controlled detonation to ensure the safety of law enforcement and others in the area,” FBI New York said in a statement.
