NEW: DC’s America 250 Fireworks Display Enters Guinness World Record Book

The fireworks display held in Washington, D.C. for last month’s Fourth of July celebrations, which formed part of the nation’s America 250 anniversary celebrations, has been recognized by Guinness World Records as the largest firework display.

According to the official record, the display consisted of 840,537 fireworks and was achieved by Freedom 250 LLC and Pyrotecnico Inc. at an event organized by Event Strategies Inc. in Washington, D.C.

The event took place on the National Mall and surrounding areas. Organizers had planned a show featuring more than 850,000 pyrotechnic effects over approximately 40 minutes, roughly twice the length of traditional Independence Day displays in the capital, which typically involved 17,000 to 20,000 shells and lasted 17 to 20 minutes. Fireworks were launched from 10 sites, including both sides of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, West Potomac Park, and multiple barges on the Potomac River.

Thunderstorms temporarily delayed the proceedings, as attendees were temporarily evacuated from the National Mall, and the presidential remarks and fireworks were postponed. The display ultimately began around midnight, extending into the early hours of July 5. A spokesperson for Pyrotecnico indicated prior to the event that the planned detonation rate was about 21,250 pyrotechnics per minute.

The previous Guinness World Record for the largest firework display was set in 2016 by organizers associated with a church in the Philippines, which launched 810,904 fireworks over the course of more than an hour.

Pyrotecnico, a Pennsylvania-based company, handled the production. “Our team worked through extreme heat and long days to create a show that lived up to this once-in-a-generation moment,” company President Rocco Vitale said in a statement following the event.

“No other president in history could have accomplished the incredible feat that President Trump did at our Nation’s historic 250th birthday celebration, which included an incredible air show, a record-breaking fireworks display, and an inspiring speech delivered before hundreds of thousands of American patriots,” White House spokesman Davis Ingles stated in a separate statement. This iconic day will forever stand as one of the most historic celebrations in American history and will never be forgotten by generations to come.”

The fireworks formed the concluding element of the Salute to America 250 Celebration and Fireworks on July 4, which also featured military flyovers and demonstrations by units including the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds, U.S. Navy Blue Angels, and various service fleet reviews, along with musical performances and remarks by President Donald Trump.
