NEW: Dem Lawmaker Threatens To Attack ICE Agents, Gets Major Warning

A Rhode Island lawmaker is trying to fight the law. On Thursday, the law fought back in the form of an ominous warning from federal immigration authorities.

State Representative Enrique Sanchez, who has a recent history peppered with DUI arrests and late-night illegal parties, lashed out at U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on social media Thursday, accusing “Nazi ICE thugs” of terrorizing residents in his district and threatening vengeance.

“It will be soon the day that I confront these Nazi ICE thugs in person for terrorizing our communities,” he wrote on X. “It will be a day of reckoning and no going back.”

The remark not only drew swift condemnation from ICE supporters but also from a member of leadership at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security.

Spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin quote-posted Sanchez’s remark, ensuring he would be notified of her reply, and threw down not a threat, but a promise of her own.

“Cowards like this Rhode Island State Rep hide behind their keyboards and threaten the brave men and women of ICE,” she said.

“If you lay a hand on ICE law enforcement we will arrest you and you will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”

The dispute arose only after Sanchez spent the past few weeks lobbing pointed threats at ICE agents on social media, according to WPRI.

He lamented the “kidnapping of a Providence neighbor” by “Nazi Gestapo ICE thugs.”

“They think they are above the law. I strongly condemn this act of terror and will be demanding answers and seeking action tomorrow,” Sanchez wrote on X. “I am tired of this s***. Providence doesn’t want ICE thugs in our city.”

The comment was condemned by both Democrats and Republicans and picked up national traction as outlets like Fox News labeled Sanchez’s views “heinous” and an “insult” to immigration officers.

In turn, Sanchez fired back, “Fox News has nothing better to report on. These people are ridiculous. Gente ridicula.”

Earlier this month, Sanchez announced he is planning to file state legislation prohibiting any local Rhode Island authority from“cooperat[ing] in any way or form with Nazi Gestapo ICE officials.”

Even Democratic Gov. Dan McKee denounced Sanchez’s latest string of statements, a sign of how little support he may receive if he decides to confront ICE agents out in the field.

“The people of our state don’t want these thugs in our state,” Sanchez wrote, urging McKee and other Democrats to “rescind their statements.”

State Rep. Charlene Lima, a Cranston Democrat, said she and members of her caucus actually prefer if local authorities assist ICE in capturing and deporting dangerous individuals.

“If I was mayor or governor, I would be mandating law enforcement must help ICE to keep our communities safer,” Lima said. “In fact, there’d be penalties if they didn’t help. That’s what our job is: to protect our community and keep our streets safe.”

She criticized Sanchez’s rhetoric, describing him as a “misguided” lawmaker who doesn’t understand the damage his stances do to his own community.

“I think that Representative Sanchez is very genuine in his feelings, but he’s very misguided in thinking that he is protecting his community by protecting the criminals,” Lima said. “He’s protecting the wrong people.”
