NEW: Democrat James Talarico’s Victory Celebration Upended By Bombshell Video
Fresh off his Democratic Senate primary win in Texas, state Sen. James Talarico is facing new scrutiny after Republicans resurfaced a video from his time in the Texas Legislature in which he claimed there are six biological sexes.
The video, recorded during a 2021 committee hearing, shows Talarico arguing that sex exists on a “spectrum” while questioning legislation involving transgender athletes in girls’ K-12 sports.
Talarico defeated Rep. Jasmine Crockett in Tuesday’s Democratic Senate primary, but the resurfaced clip has quickly become ammunition for critics who say the lawmaker’s views are out of step with voters.
During the hearing before the Texas House Public Education Committee, Talarico pushed back on a bill sponsored by Republican state Rep. Cole Hefner.
“The bill seems to think there are two,” Talarico said to Hefner.
“The one thing I want us to all be aware of is that modern science obviously recognizes that there are many more than two biological sexes.”
He added: “In fact, there are six, which honestly, Rep. Hefner, surprised me, too.”
Talarico, a Harvard-educated former English teacher with a master’s degree in education policy, told lawmakers that the additional sexes are based on different combinations of X and Y chromosomes.
According to Talarico, there are “six really common biological sexes” — not just XX and XY, but also single X, XXY, XYY and XXXY.
“The point is that biologically speaking, scientifically speaking, sex is a spectrum, and oftentimes can be very ambiguous,” he said.

His comments were immediately challenged during the hearing by Beth Stelzer, who testified in support of the bill.
Stelzer argued that the chromosomal conditions cited by Talarico are not separate sexes.
“The other, quote, sexes mentioned are disorders of sexual development that are variants of XX or XY chromosomes. They are still disorders of male or female,” she said.
The remarks also drew ridicule online at the time, including from conservative commentator Dinesh D’Souza, who wrote on X that the “only thing obvious here is this man’s stupidity.”
Talarico did not cite sources during the hearing to support his claim.

Medical institutions have noted that variations in X and Y chromosomes can occur when sperm or egg formation goes wrong. Children’s Hospital Colorado says such chromosomal differences can lead to health conditions and physical differences in some patients.
“Males with an extra X chromosome usually have small testicles and show delayed or incomplete pubertal development due to low levels of testosterone,” the hospital states on its website.
“Girls with Turner syndrome [one X chromosome] can have short stature, webbing of the neck, a broad chest and shorter fourth fingers.”
The resurfaced video is now circulating widely among Republicans as Talarico prepares for the next phase of the Senate race, threatening to complicate the rollout of his campaign after a high-profile primary victory.
