NEW: Democrat Senator Suffers Freudian Slip On Live TV, Admits Party ‘Cares Most’ About Illegal Immigrants

Sen. Chris Murphy handed Republicans a made-for-TV sound bite during an MSNBC interview, telling host Chris Hayes that Democrats had failed to deliver for “the people we care about most: the undocumented Americans that are in this country.”

Murphy, a Connecticut Democrat, made the remark during a discussion of border policy negotiations and why past Democratic strategies haven’t produced a pathway to citizenship.

“The negotiation didn’t have a path to citizenship,” Hayes said. “It was entirely on their terms in order to get Ukraine funding, right?”

Murphy responded by arguing Democrats had leaned for decades on a familiar playbook and came up empty, before landing on the phrasing that’s now being clipped and circulated by conservatives.

“That’s been a failed play for 20 years, so you are right that that has been the Democratic strategy for 30 years, maybe,” Murphy said, “and it has failed to deliver for the people we care about most: the undocumented Americans that are in this country.”

Republicans and conservative commentators quickly seized on the line, calling it an unfiltered admission that the party’s priorities tilt toward illegal immigrants over U.S. citizens — especially as Washington remains locked in a bitter fight over Department of Homeland Security funding and immigration enforcement.

Murphy’s wording also drew backlash because “undocumented Americans” is not a legal category. The immigration debate typically turns on whether someone is in the country legally, seeking asylum, holding temporary protections, or subject to removal — distinctions that have become central to the current fight over border enforcement and deportations.

With the midterms looming, GOP operatives are already framing Murphy’s line as a gift-wrapped attack ad: a Democratic senator, on live television, describing illegal immigrants as the group his party “care[s] about most.”
