NEW: DOJ Considers Ban On Trans Individuals Owning Firearms
Senior Justice Department officials have held several meetings focused on limiting the rights of transgender-identifying individuals to own firearms. The plan comes in the aftermath of the Annunciation Catholic School shooting in Minneapolis, in which a transgender-identifying individual killed two students and wounded several more as they attended a school-wide mass.
According to a report from Breitbart News citing multiple sources familiar with the matter, the Office of Legal Council (OLC) — which advises the Attorney General on legal matters — has held a number of meetings in recent days.
The legal question on allowing transgender individuals to own firearms would focus on whether people suffering from gender dysphoria are mentally ill and therefore should be forbidden from owning guns given the presence of what the administration views as a serious mental disorder.
Such a move would almost certainly draw legal challenges and would surely be a landmark case involving both the second amendment and gender dysphoria’s classification as a mental illness rather than a choice.
“Democrats have called for common sense gun laws for a long time – this seems pretty common sense to me,” a source within the Justice Department told Breitbart News. While a decision has not yet been finalized, the meetings seemingly indicate that Attorney General Pam Bondi is considering a response to the shooting in some capacity.
Elsewhere within the federal government, Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has authorized an investigation into whether the deceased gunman, Robin Westman, was on any psychoactive drugs.
“Mass shootings are a health crisis, and we are doing for the first time real studies to find out what the ideology of that is. And we’re looking for the first time at psychiatric drugs,” he said while speaking alongside Texas Governor Greg Abbott last week.
“Kids, my classmates, and other people would bring a .22 rifle with their guns to school and park it in the parking lot. Nobody was shooting… There’s never been a time in the history of humanity when people walked into a crowd, into a church, or a movie theater, or a school, or a crowd and just started randomly shooting. It’s happening in our country. It’s not happening around the world.”
“Something changed,” he continued, “and it dramatically changed human behavior.”
“And one of the culprits we need to examine is whether the fact that we are the most over-medicated population in the world. And a lot of those are psychiatric drugs that have black box warnings on them that warn of suicidal and homicidal ideation.”
