NEW: Ex-Dem Senator Blows The Whistle, Says Party’s ‘Paid’ Goons Threatened His Kids Over Votes
Former Sen. Joe Manchin, who left the Democratic Party and became independent before retiring, made a startling revelation on the All-In Podcast on Thursday, stating that well-funded Biden-aligned groups launched an eight-month pressure campaign against him in 2021 to coerce him into backing the $3.5 trillion Build Back Better bill.
During his interview on the podcast, Manchin revealed that he received death threats — including ones made against members of his family — along with harassment from paid protesters who encircled his D.C. houseboat in kayaks.
Manchin’s resistance to the legislation ultimately led to the bill being hacked and slashed from $3.5 trillion to $740 billion. It then became known as the Inflation Reduction Act —an ironic name given the inflationary spike that followed its enactment.
The former senator recounted how he needed to be escorted by security to work due to the severity of the threats made against him at the time. Manchin’s latest disclosure, years after the events, is sparking debate about the integrity of the country’s democratic processes and the use of intimidation tactics in politics.
“I told him, I said, ‘Mr. President, I’m sorry, man, I can’t get there.’ And they tried for eight months to beat up on me. I mean, I had to have security,” Manchin said during the interview.
“What is that like? What does the pressure campaign look like?” All-In co-host Chamath Palihapitiya asked. “Because it’s not just the President exactly as you write in the book — it’s people showing up at your house. It’s people with little kayaks with protest signs around your boat. It’s pretty intense.”
“It’s pretty intense, but I can tell you one thing: when every day the Capitol Police call you and say your death threats are serious right now — ‘We’ll meet you down where you live, and we’ll bring you to work, and we’ll take you back home’ — you know things are pretty serious. I never wanted to know the extent, but I knew they were serious,” Manchin responded.
“Then one time they said, ‘This is really getting serious now, because now we got things — they know where your children go to school, they know where your grandchildren are, where your kids live.’ And I’m thinking, ‘Oh my God, this is crazy.'”

Manchin claims none of these acts were spontaneous in nature, but were part of a well-crafted plan to force him to go along with former President Joe Biden’s agenda. This storyline aligns with others reported in the past, including an incident in which climate change protesters surrounded Manchin’s vehicle in a parking garage in November 2021.
The group responsible for the protest is the Third Act Movement, which was founded just several months before the encounter with Manchin. Third Act Movement is known for planning and coordinating protests against fossil fuel funding.
Capitol Police authorities released a statement in September 2025 revealing that they handle close to 14,000 threat assessment cases a year, which demonstrates the prevalence of political violence in our modern era.
