NEW: Favorability Poll Shows Trump Well Ahead Of Taylor Swift
Almost two weeks following Election Day, it remains an open question whether Taylor Swift’s endorsement of Vice President Kamala Harris helped her campaign or doomed her for failure. But looking back, favorability numbers for the singer compared to President-elect Donald Trump are shedding some light on Americans’ decision making.
Trump carries higher favorability numbers than Swift among voters who responded to a September poll, Fox News reported, indicating that the singer, venerated as Time Magazine Person of the Year in 2023, has since fallen out of favor with many. Her bravado in endorsing Harris following her debate with Trump hinted that the Democrat was on the ascendency six weeks after jumping into the race, giving the cautious Swift an opening to move her millions of fans into the voting booth. According to figures from a New York Times, Philadelphia Inquirer and Siena College poll, she may have done the opposite.

Fox News reported on the poll, which surveyed 2,500 likely votes one day after Swift endorsed Harris on September 10th. In it, 44% held a favorable view of the “Eras” singer while 34% viewed her unfavorably; in contrast, 47% viewed Trump favorably while 51% did not. The breakdown was decidedly partisan, with 70% of Democrats having a positive view of Swift while just 23% of Republicans felt the same. But a crucial lack on independent support for the 34-year-old singer may be key to determining her lasting impression on the 2024 election: just 41% of registered independent voters saw Swift in a positive light, indicating that the Hollywood’s star power may be dimming during election season.
Swift’s endorsement came after a blistering two-hour debate where Trump repeated a claim that Haitian immigrants in Springfield, Ohio were eating pets. Signed “Childless Cat Lady,” a reference to J.D. Vance’s previous statement, Swift urged her 238 million Instagram followers to register to vote for the Harris-Walz ticket. “I will be casting my vote for Kamala Harris and Tim Walz in the 2024 Presidential Election,” she wrote at the time. “I’m voting for @kamalaharris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them. I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.”
“I was so heartened and impressed by her selection of running mate @timwalz, who has been standing up for LGBTQ+ rights, IVF, and a woman’s right to her own body for decades,” Swift added. She shared a link to Vote.gov, a site run by the General Services Administration and the Election Assistance Commission which connects Americans to their state election resources. The site received over 400,000 hits in the 24 hours following Swift’s endorsement.
Vance, who claimed he was a victim of a “misinterpreted” statement leveraged by Swift and other critics, was among the first to openly question whether the “Bad Blood” singer’s opinion would negatively affect Harris. “We admire Taylor Swift’s music, but I don’t think most Americans, whether they like her music or are fans of hers or not, are going to be influenced by a billionaire celebrity who I think is fundamentally disconnected from the interests and the problems of most Americans,” Vance said at the time. Trump said in an interview he preferred Brittany Mahomes, the wife of NFL superstar Patrick Mahomes.
The 2024 endorsement of Harris-Walz was not the first foray into politics by Swift. Behind-the-scenes footage from her 2020 documentary “Miss Americana” revealed Swift confiding to her parents that she wished she did more to speak out against Trump in 2016. Shortly before the release of her pro-LGBT anthem “You Need to Calm Down” in 2019, she launched a Change.org petition asking fans to appeal to Congress to pass the Equality Act, a bill intended to ban discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.
