The Lake County Board of County Commissioners unanimously approved on Tuesday a resolution to rename a local road in honor of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was assassinated while speaking with students at Utah Valley University on September 10.

The proposal for the name change was made by Commissioner Anthony Sabatini, who previously challenged current U.S. Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL) in the Republican primary to represent Florida’s 7th Congressional District. “After a tragic event today, I’ve addeded an item to the agenda of our next Lake County Commission meeting on September 23 to have a major road in Lake County named after Charlie Kirk,” Sabatini posted on X in the hours following Kirk’s murder.

Sabatani noted that Lake County is the first in the nation to name a roadway in honor of Kirk before calling on other lawmakers both in Florida and the wider United States to follow their lead.

“HUGE NEWS—My Resolution to name a road in honor of the great Charlie Kirk just PASSED 5-0! Lake County is now the 1st local government in the nation to name a road after the great,” the commissioner posted on X after the proposal was adopted on Tuesday. “Thank you to my colleagues on the Lake County Commission & to Floridians across the state who supported this proposal! Hoping more counties & cities across the country follow our lead! FOR CHARLIE.”

Andrew Kolvet, the executive producer of the Charlie Kirk show, praised Lake County commissioners for the “amazing” news and echoed Sabatini in calling for additional lawmakers to replicate. “I would love to see Charlie Kirk highways all over America as an enduring reminder of his sacrifice for this country,” Kolvet wrote in an X post of his own.

Last week, the U.S. House and Senate passed a passed a “National Day of Remembrance” in honor of Kirk’s life and legacy. The Senate on Thursday unanimously approved a resolution marking October 14, 2025 — Kirk’s birthday — a “National Day of Remembrance for Charlie Kirk.”

In the approved resolution, the Senate “recognizes Charlie Kirk for his contributions to civic education and public service” and “encourages educational institutions, civic organizations and citizens across the United States to observe this day.”

The House passed the measure on Friday, though 96 Democrats refused to support it.
