NEW: Fourth US Service Member Dies In Iran Conflict

A fourth American service member has died after Iran’s weekend attack on U.S. forces in Kuwait, deepening the toll from one of the deadliest blows against American troops since the latest round of fighting began.

U.S. Central Command said Monday that the service member had initially been listed as seriously wounded but later succumbed to those injuries.

The identities of the fallen are being withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.

“Major combat operations continue and our response effort is ongoing,” CENTCOM said.

The military had first announced Sunday that three U.S. service members were killed and five more were seriously wounded in the Iranian strike. Several others suffered minor shrapnel wounds and concussions, were treated and were preparing to return to duty.

The victims were members of a U.S. Army unit responsible for supplies and logistics, according to a person familiar with the situation.

Before the fourth death was announced, President Trump made clear that any American loss was already too many.

“three is three too many, as far as I’m concerned,” Trump told The New York Times Sunday evening, while adding that Pentagon projections suggested the toll could rise.

At a Monday news conference, Gen. Dan “Raizin” Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, warned that more losses could still be ahead as the campaign continues.

“we expect to take additional losses, and as always, we will work to minimize US losses,” Caine said.

He also stressed that the operation against Iran will not be over quickly.

“This is not a single, overnight operation,” he said. “The military objectives that CENTCOM and the Joint Force have been tasked with will take some time to achieve — and in some cases will be difficult and gritty work … these are major combat operations.”

The mounting casualties underscore the growing cost of the conflict as the United States and its allies press deeper into a dangerous and expanding campaign against Iran.

Trump has said he expects the operation, which began Feb. 28, to last about four weeks.

“It’s always been a four-week process,” Trump told the Daily Mail. “We figured it will be four weeks or so. It’s always been about a four-week process so, as strong as it is, it’s a big country, it’ll take four weeks, or less.”

In the same interview, the president said he had not been surprised by the pace of the campaign, except for the scale of the damage inflicted on Iran’s command structure.

“we took out their entire leadership, far, far more than what we thought,” Trump said.

For now, the grim reality is clear: four American service members are dead, more are badly wounded and the hardest phase of the fight may still lie ahead.
