NEW: Longtime GOP Congressional Leader Strongly Hints At Run For Governor

U.S. Rep. James Comer (R-KY) has indicated that he is likely to announce a campaign for governor of Kentucky this coming November, with the election scheduled for 2027.

Comer, a Republican who represents Kentucky’s 1st Congressional District and chairs the House Oversight Committee, has not formally entered the race. He did all but confirm that he will be announcing a bid while speaking with the Daily Signal, however. “I have not announced, but everything’s looking very positive that I will announce. We’re going to make a decision in the second or third week of November,” the congressman said.

He added that the field for the Republican nomination appears relatively open. “There are some lower-tier Republicans that have filed or are going to file, but as far as someone with name ID that can either raise money or self-fund, I don’t see anyone,” Comer said. “Of course, there are still several months until January when the final deadline ends. But right now, things look very encouraging, and I think the reason that nobody has filed is because they’re anticipating me filing and they’re going to support me.”

Comer,  54, previously sought the governorship in 2015 while serving as Kentucky agriculture commissioner. He lost the Republican primary to Matt Bevin — who went on to win the general election — by 83 votes after a re-canvass. Comer was later elected to Congress in 2016 and has served since. Before that, he spent more than a decade in the Kentucky House of Representatives.

Kentucky Secretary of State Michael Adams, a Republican who had been viewed as a potential candidate, announced last month at the Fancy Farm picnic that he would not run and instead endorsed Comer. “And the best thing I can do for my team is to call on all Republicans to join me in supporting James Comer to be our next governor,” he said.

As for the time being, Comer is seeking reelection to the U.S. House in November 2026 and has said he would decide on a gubernatorial bid after that contest. “I plan on running for governor in 2027. It’s not official yet; it will probably be official somewhere around December,” the congressman said earlier this year.

Current Democrat Governor Andy Beshear cannot seek a third consecutive term in 2027 because of Kentucky’s two-term consecutive limit. Beshear, whose father Steve Beshear also served as governor, won election in 2019 and reelection in 2023.

Kentucky has voted Republican in every presidential election since 2000. In 2024, Donald Trump received 64.5 percent of the vote to Kamala Harris’s 33.9 percent, a margin of more than 30 points. Republicans also hold supermajorities in both chambers of the General Assembly and most other statewide offices.

Gubernatorial races have historically been more competitive for Democrats than federal contests; Democrats have held the governorship for much of the past several decades despite the state’s Republican lean at the presidential and congressional levels. An open seat after two terms of a Democratic governor in a state that consistently supports Republicans in other races has been widely viewed as favorable for the Republican nominee.
