NEW: Key GOP Holdout Signals Support For Mike Johnson

In a key development for House Republicans, Representative Victoria Spartz (R-IN), a previous holdout, has announced her support for Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) as the 119th Congress convenes. Her endorsement strengthens Johnson’s leadership position amid intense intra-party negotiations and a razor-thin GOP majority.

“I will support him,” Spartz told reporters early Friday, signaling a shift in her stance that had been closely watched. Spartz’s vote could be pivotal as Johnson, endorsed by President-elect Donald Trump, seeks to advance an ambitious agenda despite the narrowest House majority in nearly a century.

The endorsement comes as Speaker Johnson laid out his vision for the GOP-controlled House, framing his leadership around fiscal responsibility and the “America First” agenda championed by Trump. In a statement shared on social media, Johnson reinforced the importance of addressing the national debt, government accountability, and spending reforms.

“The American people have demanded an end to the status quo and a return to fiscal sanity,” Johnson wrote. “If we don’t follow through on our campaign promise for fiscal responsibility, we don’t deserve to hold power.”

Johnson outlined a three-step plan aimed at creating transparency around federal spending and ensuring accountability within government agencies. This includes establishing a working group of independent experts to review spending reforms, auditing federal agencies, and strengthening congressional oversight.

“If we want to restore fiscal responsibility, we must start by being transparent about the dollars that are spent, address the issues we find, and then hold those accountable who have misspent funds,” Johnson wrote on X. “Republicans have a mandate to implement the America First Agenda, and as Speaker, this will be my priority.”

Spartz responded promptly, writing, “I appreciate @SpeakerJohnson ’s public commitment to the American people to deliver on President Trump’s agenda and drain the swamp.”

His approach hopes to resonate with conservative Republicans, who have long prioritized reducing the size of government. However, Johnson’s leadership faces potential hurdles as he seeks to balance the demands of fiscal hardliners with the practicalities of governing with a slim majority.

The 119th Congress begins at a pivotal moment for Republicans, who hold control of both chambers of Congress and the White House. The process for selecting the next House speaker begins with nominations once a quorum is reached, where Republicans have nominated Johnson and Democrats have chosen Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY).

Voting then occurs via a roll call, with members not required to vote along party lines. If Johnson fails to secure a majority, additional roll call votes will be held until a candidate achieves the necessary majority. The winner is then escorted by a bipartisan committee to take the oath of office.
